need some valve cover gasket help fellas

Ok now I need some serious help. I needed to change the valve cover gasket because I was having a leak that was dripping on the exhaust. It started about 2 weeks ago its on the passenger side in the rear of the valve cover. Next to the tranny dip stick . When I would put my hand under the last bolt id pull it out and it would have oil. So I bought all the stuff and changed it today. I got all toyota parts. Valve cover gaskets, plugs, wires, new grommet s for the valve covers, new spark plug gaskets, and cam plugs. I also got FIPG to help seal. After I did it I let it sit for about 6 hours. Then went and litely washed the engine with degreaser . Drove it home and same problem dripping on the exhaust. Im pissed. I need some help. Ill see if I can post pics.

 

Are you sure its not your ac dripping onto it ?

 

Pics are the way to go.. Did you replace the Pcv valve?

 

Pcv replaced and grommet replaced. Ya im sure its not ac, you can tell its oil let me see about pics.

 

Did you replace the cam plugs? Also, it may have have been the rear semi circle leaking. There is a semi circle plug at the front and rear of the heads. They are sealed with FIPG and can leak once the FIPG gets old. When I did my valve cover gaskets, I pulled these semi circles and re packed them with new FIPG.

 

Great write up. But I did all that.

 

I did do the full moon plugs , but no semis .

 

I cant figure out how to post pics.

 

Then my guess would be the rear semi circle plug leaking.

Your valve cover looks to be cracked as you stated, possibly someone over tightened it in the past to stop a leak. You might be able to clean it real well with brake clean let it dry well and seal it off with high temp silicone to get you by for now. Is that a 3.4 or 2.7?

 

Yup, someone else somewhere got excited tightening that bolt it seems. Could have happened at the assembly line with a defective torque set gun. Those cover bolts don't require as much pressure as one would think. If you put silicone down,,then crank that bolt down really tight,,you just wasted good silicone for the most part.

Remove and JB weld after good prep,,inside and out. Don't put a timid little bead around there, You need to reinforce that corner by plastering it pretty good. Not much alum there for that hold down. Keep your sealing surfaces swiped clear of the epoxy.

Or snag a junkyard cover if you can and want.

It still might be those semi's leaking, adding to the mess,,if they weren't replaced and siliconed in.

I did do the jb weld. I have been letting it cure as we speak. i also found a cover on ebay that I went and picked up just in case.

 

Hope you got your problem resolved. What torque pressure did you use when tightening the bolts? 53 in pounds?

 

i had the same problem the previous owner cracked the valve cover from over torquing it , so i had to dish out 80 dollars for a used good valve cover , so i replace it with a new gasket and some gasket seal and boom it was fixed

 

For those that don't know. 53 inch pounds is about 4.41 foot pounds...so just about hand tight

 

Yup, if you see inch-pounds, divide by 12 to get foot-pounds.
