This is a photo of one of the rail sysyems we have. It sells for $275.00 [[/QUOTE]

I was thinking about getting some angle steel and mounting my Yakima bars to it. I still have the base units from my Rangers canopy. It would basically look just like that. So many ideas to ponder.

You going to be in Redmond at the Sportsmans show on the 8th or at the Shop?

We will have our new showroom open up in April for off road trailers and different rack systems. We have a few different trailer styles and options. We are going to have 6-8 different styles. Let me know what you are looking for and see if we have anything that can help you outside of a project.

This thread just became a real bummer for me. I just paid $350 for the factory roof rack because I assumed it would be capable of supporting a RTT (or my kayaks) or any number of other items and now I find out that it's probably not capable of carrying that weight. What the heck? Why would Toyota sell a roof rack on what's marketed as a rugged truck if it was almost entirely cosmetic? Now I'm really pretty angry and apparently have to spend more than I had anticipated to get set up for the CVT tent. Geez.

You can try it first...The factory racks are rated to 150-200lbs so in theory they should. I had Yakima stuff from my last pick up so I have never had any experience with the OEM rack but I have read a few people who have had issues. I personally have not. I think the CVT would evenly distribute the weight better than a canoe (and the person did not specify whether it was old and wood or new and composite). For Kayaks you should have no issue as they are nice and light and again with how wide the CVT is, most of the pressure will be closest to the Rails and not in the middle of the cross bars.

^^That however is all speculation so anyone with first hand please chime in here.

Well, I just looked in the 2014 Tacoma Accessories brochure that I had picked up at the dealer and I see that the rack is rated at 75 pounds but I'm not sure if that's 75 pounds per rail or total. It's ridiculous either way. Like I said before, this is supposed to be a rugged off-road truck and I'm sure that most customers who spring for the roof rack intend to carry more than 75 pounds on it. Geez.

I had the factory rack on my previous 4-Runner and used it all the time for luggage or my kayaks but can't really say that I ever went above 150 pounds total. I don't think I would have hesitated to install a 130-150 pound RTT to that rack though. Maybe I'll get lucky but like I said before, I'm really bummed (and that's just the nice word that I'm using here on the forum).

75lbs!!! Yeah that's pathetic on Toyatas part. Hopefully that is 75lbs per cross bar which means you would get 150lbs. Remember all weights are listed as moving weight. Once static that weight is usually 2-3 times greater.

I just did a quick search around and can't seem to find any pics of an RTT on a Tacoma OEM roof rack - they all appear to be aftermarket. Not saying that it can't be done but I'd investigate thoroughly before you consider putting the tent on the OEM rack.

Anybody want to buy a factory roof rack? Geez, I'm angry at myself for not having researched a bit before I ordered the OEM rack but I'm even more angry at Toyota for the stupidity for selling a rack that holds so little weight on what is supposed to be a rugged off-road vehicle that people use for overland adventures all the time. I'm now leaning towards selling the OEM rack and paying for a Yakima or Thule system on the cap that I have on order.

That said, I'd love to hear from anyone that uses a RTT or something similar on the OEM rack since I already have it and it's paid for. Geez.......

I just looked at the above link and now I have another reason to be angry too. We ordered the roof rack as an afterthought after our truck had already been ordered and the salesman said, "sure, we'll install it at our cost" and then proceeded to charge $353 for it. When I told him that $350 was the MSRP on the accessory, he gave me some garbage about it costing more to install at the dealership and I again reminded him that he offered to install it at their cost and not charge me installation. Geez, $222 on sale on that site. Bastages!

Wait, you've got a Tacoma that comes in models with fake hood scoops, Sat/Nav/touchscreen radios, and you didn't think there might be other mostly-cosmetic options? ;)

Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for you - but just a little bit of research would have pointed out the obviously deficient carrying capacity. If you can't return them, I'm sure you can find a buyer on the marketplace at 80%+ cost. Just think of it as a constant reminder to use ALL the resources at your disposal and plenty of research first.

Wut? I have a 09 and the OEM rack is rated @ 200lbs. The Rainier that I have is 175lb and the rack has no problem supporting it. With my gf, myself and the RTT coming close to 450lbs static, the OEM rack still doesn't have a problem supporting that weight.

Not sure where you got the 75lbs rating at.

Here's some pics of my Rainier on OEM rack:

 that can't be right!!! LOL
I am positive I saw the rating was 200lbs somewhere. That's the reason why I even put the RTT on the OEM rack.

I think I'm gonna stick to constructing a bed mount for mine if i decide to buy. Heck a well made pressure treated wood one would have no problems holding the weight of the RTT and occupants. And when you're done for the season, simply slide it out of the bed and set it in the ground.

No doubt that I fell asleep on this one. I tend to do all sorts of research but I called at the last minute on a whim and asked them to install the factory rack, presuming that it would be plenty to support the RTT. I'll call Toyota tomorrow and see what they tell me about the ability of the rack to support the RTT (I can already imagine that they'll claim it can't because they won't want a liability suit if I fall through the roof, ha ha) and then I'll likely sell it and install a Yakima or Thule system on my cap.

Would that support the weight of a tent?

Also, This may also be another dumb question.....how do the Yakima and Thule racks mount to the roof? Also, would they mount up on an access cab?
