The MPG information he is quoting is coming from the Driver Information Center on the instrument cluster.

Aftermarket GPS/Stereo head units can not do any fuel consumption calculations... the Garmin-based units have an "eco-drive challenge" mode that GUESSES based on your acceleration and braking profiles, and you can manually input the fuel you purchased (and correct the inaccurate mileage logged).

$70 will get you an UltraGauge that will provide more information than most drivers would ever want... once you get it calibrated properly, which is a challenge.

to be honest most of my experience is with honda/Acura toyota / Lexus this is the first modern day navigation from GM and to be honest. its every bit as good if not better than the toyota and honda units. i have had several Kenwoods in my tacoma, in fact every generation thats come out. and while they work good they take forever to boot up and they are buggy. sometimes they do random stuff and need to be rebooted.
the boot up time is so slow even on the newer radio that i can be totally out of my neighborhood before it actually starts to play music.
in fact i have a ken wood DNN 990 for sale if you know anyone interested.

i concur, i have the ultra gauge and i can verify that once calibrated it is pretty damn accurate even on my SC'd taco my fill ups were within .1 of a gallon most the time.
i can tell you the stock speedo is no where near accurate with factory size tires on.
i went to a 285/50/20 a slightly taller tire and bingo! the speedo is dead accurate. but the trip odometer is always reading less miles than actually driven.
but the ultra gauge once calibrated clicks off mile after mile marker post with accuracy if you calibrated it correctly.
i find that if you drive at least 30-40 miles then calibrate it, it's much more accurate.
then do a few tanks of gas keeping track of each and total it up at the last fill up will get the MPG on target.
with that gauge the best MPG i ever got was 22.5 but i was driving 65 mph the whole time.

Mine is close, but with changes in fuel blend through the year, it changes.
I just leave mine calibrated to the least optimistic fuel blend so I know that I'm always doing as well or better than indicated. I'm typically within 1/2mpg.

I hear you on the tire size. With my 5-lug, I'm close, but it runs a little fast (indicated 73 at 70). The odometer error is smaller than the speedo error though... same as my motorcycle (but not as extreme, the bike is almost 10% fast, odo is about half that).

If the Taco can get 20mpg I'm trading my 2013 in, IDGAF. I only get 15mpg and it's raping me big time. I can't complain though I love the truck.

    None...yet.
Looking at the original link to the pdf document, it lists some models being "re-designed" vs some being "re-engineered." So what is the difference?

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
Sounds like a reengineer is a mid cycle refresh while a redesign is a whole new generation. Sort of like the 2012 was a redesign for the Tacoma and from 2004-2005 was a redesign for the Tacoma.

That new V-6 unveiling was for the new Highlander, the plant is also all next gen US Toyota power plants. Toyota had mentioned this a number of years ago, I believe it was truck trend that had the article

No money, all went to truck...
these redesign threads are always pretty lame because 99% of the stuff said are rumors. BUT the idea of a redesigned taco with a new engine is extremely exciting to me.

All the taco needs is a motor with same output but better MPG.

Anybody notice that the rear view mirror still looks like a plain jane? Guess Toyota did really go away with home link and compass and temp gauge! :/

Referring to the video that is of the TRD pro

anyone else notice it mentioned the tacoma currently with a 236hp V8?
i really doubt they would put a V8 in this truck ever... i suppose its all a nice dream though.

i just hope im in the country when they start taking PRO orders. im convinced!

Look for styling cues... to come from the all-new 2014 Tundra.

    Uh oh, I think I'll buy a 2014 then.
