...can't say since i haven't owned one... it's hard to keep track of "build quality" (not likely an easily quantifiable thing btw :D) because the manufacturing from these tv/electronics makers, and the parts/suppliers they use, always seems to be changing...

...i think the following site is good for folks to learn more about the idiosyncrasies of the tv industry, as well as getting specific info about particular makes/models...

    Dropped off the TV yesterday.

Got a call a today. The LED panel needs to be replace(they didn't get specific as to what was wrong wit it), 800$ plus just for the panel, and that does not even include shipping and the labor.

Gave me the advice that its not even worth repairing.

Well I guess it's time to go shopping for a newer set. Just waiting on that tax return :D

Kind of ironic that my 7 year old 32" Samsung LCD is still going strong. Weird:confused:

Most likely get another Samsung, just love their TV to much haha. Or a Sony

But ya, thanks anyways for all the advice guys.

I am looking into a Samsung when my sony finally dies for good. My sony has a heckuva picture when I am not getting those lines and flickers but because of these problems I will probably not buy another sony.

Whoops, I just read your post above, I guess it wasn't the caps.

Sam's has a sweet 60" Sammy for $1400. Sony is all but gone from the LCD TV business. Last time it was in Best Buy there were only 2 models, one being $8k.

I just picked up my new tv a few weeks ago after doing about a months worth of research. i ended up getting a samsung 60" 8500 series plasma. It is rated as one of the highest picture qualities ever in a tv. Almost as high as the new $9000 oled ones. Quality is better than the new 4k ultra hd tv's for half the price. Was listed @ hh gregg for 2399 and they negotiated it down to 1995 with a samsung sound bar! If you have never looked at this tv in person you should really take a look.

I kind of have a budget in mind, 1900$ is pretty much my max.

46" was the biggest one that I've ever purchase, but I do want to step it up to the 50"s, or if there's good deals out there why not 60"s :D

I am going to shop around. There's two places I'm going to check out, of course one is Best Buy and another is Navy Exchange. I know BB price matches, so we'll see what deals are out there.

Anyone got the (I think) 55" Samsung 8000 Series? Watch a vid on YT, dang thing is gorgeous.

Wish mine was that price. Back in 2009, I bought a Samsung 46" 8-series without 3D, and it was probably closer to $2k

Ouch! We also got a deal on a "open box" $500 Samsung 43" for 250 bucks. Basically the same TV as the one that went out that I paid $1400 for it 6 years ago. It's so crazy how they go down in price over time. Best Buy have been pretty good to us in the deal making department.

most TVs now have roughly a 5-6 year lifespan or 50k working hours on them depending on how much it is on. looks like yours may have been at the point. atleast you didnt have one of the later LCD's that had capacitor issues, all samsung and warranty programs do for those was replace it with the same faulty part. So once that part ran out you would be out of warranty and have to pay more

Picked up the TV yesterday. Asked the tech what was specifically wrong with the panel. He said it just went bad, something you can't really foresee coming. Told me panel cost 870$, you add shipping, labor, don't really make much sense to repair it.

Anyways that's done for. Saw some flyers on some deals today for Navy Exchange.

    That Bravia is tempting.

Never had LG brand before but they're price a little lower then Sony and Samsung. A lot more affordable if I wanted to go bigger.

I like our sony bravia KDL-46EX501, It's older than that one, but we haven't had any issues in the 3 (?) years we've had it.

Samsung is #1 in the TV market for a reason. Quality and features. They may not be the lowest price of the tier 1's, but they are the best. I should know.. I sell millions of $$ of them every month to the major retailers/etailers in the US and the returns stats prove it.

LG is a fantastic tier 1 as well. They are the second competitor to Samsung and are pricing accordingly to grab as much of that marketshare as they can.

Sony just started laying off about 30% of their US staff, so do the math on that. They are struggling and are an old brand. They put out some good screens, but overall Samsung is where it's at. My old 42" Samsung plasma is 7 years old now and is still our primary gaming TV with no issues.

I have a passive 3-D LG 47" in the living room and absolutely love it.

I never use the 3-D feature, but the picture is phenomenal.

Yeah you don't have to go with the 8500 series to get a great picture and the Smart features, but they sure are nice.

I've had my LG 42 inch for 6 yrs, bought it when Circuit City was going under. Never an issue.

Agreed that the flat panels in general don't last like you'd think. The worst I ever got out of an old style TV was 10 yrs and I left it on all night many a time..
