Ice between Rocker Panel, Front Wheel Wheel, and Frame

I have had ice build up inside the coil, that was noisy. Also had the "tapping on the floor" not sure where that was coming from but after it warmed up it went away. Another place that drove me nuts because I couldnt find it for a few hours was the gap between the body and the bed, at the very bottom corner, ice had built up on the bed and was hitting the cab.

 

Washing it out is NOT a solution for those who have protected their vehicle with Fluid Film or other similar protectant. I don't have the issue - just commenting on that particular suggestion.

 

My comment wasn't really a suggestion as i live in sunny California but just an observation as to i see how it can happen as pretty good size crap can make its way in there. But for mud and leaves its nice to wash it out ice and snow will sooner or later melt and make its way out but dirt mud and leaves will stay in there and cause rust eventually.

 

Can you get at those leaves and shut on a stock truck? Definite spring chore if so. and fall too.

my 08 does this on the passenger side only did it after i got rid of the mudflaps. sounded like a blown strut or a loose bolt or suspension part, was bad enough that i pulled it in the garage and took the wheel off and was looking for problems. noticed all the built up ice and decided to try to knock it all out before a full disassemble noise went away but still notice the 5100's ride a lot different in sub zero temps than when its warmer.we've had everything fro the negative temps all the way to the 50's in the last two weeks. for those that haven't experienced it, it is very annoying to have the klunking sound with every little bump in the road.

 

^Get coilovers with steel bearings on each end + uniball UCAs, and the clunking sound becomes normal...

 

Had the same thing happen, it was the driver side when I turned left, couldnt figure it out, took it to the dealership and they said they couldn't replicate what I was explaining, so they gave it back and told me I had a loose exhaust hanger!! drove away and it happened again! but only after I was almost home from the dealership, So I got under my truck and started to poke around and remove panels and such, and then I saw it, a bunch of ice build up, same spot as the OP's pics. glad I'm not the only person to have this problem

 

Glad to see this thread (well, aside form all the useless criticism just wasting space).

This is my first winter with my '11 and we have had a ton of snow. This has happened to me twice, and the first time I heard it, it had me worried because I was playing around in the snow quite a bit and thought something might have broken. To me the sound was like a giant popcorn machine, but it is strange how you can feel it in your feet when it pops. I spent a half hour with the truck up on ramps checking for anything out of sorts and didn't find anything, and also chipped away all the ice that was exposed. The noise was still there, so I kicked the wife out of the garage for the night to test the ice theory, and low and behold it was quiet when I drove it the next day. So, at least now I know not to worry and that it's just ice, but, it was strange and annoying.

 

Have you even read this thread? Have you personally experienced this?

Your fun little solutions to the issue aren't as easy as you think, especially when you're in frigid weather all the time, and when you have more to do after work than chip ice out of your truck every day of your life.

I haven't gone to the dealer with it, but it's perfectly understandable that some people have. The noise truly sounds like something has broken.

 

i had this in both my 89 toyota pickup and my 99 tacoma... the only reason i stopped freaking out about it in my 89.. is because i heard it in my 99 too.

i would be driving along, usually on the highway and it would sound like someone was under the drivers side floorboard with a hammer, BANG BANG BANG. i would stop and look... and be so freaking confused because i didnt see anything hanging or swaying or anything that could make that noise. get driving again.. and BANG BANG BANG

i havent had either one of those trucks in YEARS. thanks for figuring it out! i dont feel so crazy now.

 

Yep! Me too! I thought my truck was breaking and my suspension was going out--but it was just ice built up between my rails, body, and wheel
