That totally went over my head lol :anonymous:

But yeah there'll be plenty of support for the boat sides, I'll add more tube so it's a straight transition to the belly/link crossmember.

Something I forgot to mention before - When I started cutting the boat sides I had picked up some of these 6" cutoff wheels

$1.89 at the local Farm & Fleet for the same price as the 4 1/2". They work better and last a helluva lot longer. I'll never buy another 4 1/2 cutoff wheel ever again haha. Should have started using them a long time ago.

Sorry guys forgot to separate work and fun. Bottom line is UHMW is not strong as Blackdawg said, its no stronger than wood.

Gonna have to check out those cut off wheels to...I bet TSC has them :D

I think every little bit of thickness helps a lot with regard to the stiffness of the uhmw

Nice thanks mark. I followed it so no worries :p

Very interesting though. I'd planned on a belly skid of .75" UHMW with a metal frame...but now you got me thinking of doing a 3/16" plate with 1/8" UHMW

    I'd think so too...hence why I was think 3/4..or even 7/8

I think 1/8" uhmw would likely begin to wrinkle and/or peel off after a few uses, no matter the backing.

I agree. Go thick enough to countersink the fasteners, and make sure the edges are secure. I wouldn't go thinner than 3/8" personally.

Sure you can run thick enough UHMW but then you're not gaining anything. Weight savings are gone, stiffness is less, and even think about clearance issues. Especially with how this monte is talking. A 7/8" thick skidplate is going to cost clearance.

If you add enough stiffeners to the steel, you could probably get away with 1/8", but the weight savings over 3/16" just doesn't really justify on its own.

lol yeah, roll cage for the hobart :D

Didn't want to damage the welder swinging tubing and/or tools around, but more than that I was just tired of bending over to push the crappy little welding cart around.

I don't get it, if uhmw is that weak, why even bother with it, seems like it would be just easier in the end to just build the skids and boat sides with steel instead of messing with uhmw and backing it with steel? Weight savings? I guess so but with all the work so why it doesent seems worth it. Because the uhmw slides over stuff better? Seems like steel has been pretty good so far at dragging over rocks
