Well with ice on the road and the 4x2 Tacoma being RWD, the back end will slip out like crazy and just spin. With a FWD 4x2, the weight of the motor is helping it get traction. When there might be ice on the road, or for the start of winter for that matter, I put cinderblocks in the bed of my truck to get that extra traction with my PreRunner.

and putting weight in the bed will just decrease gas mileage anway meaning its better to get the 4x4. My 2 wheel drive really sucked gas carrying weight in the back all winter for traction.

I would have thought the 400lbs for the 4x4 components would decrease the MPG's more, but I could be wrong.

I have a pre-runner OR and wish I had the 4x4 all the time, in fact almost not a day goes by I don't consider trading it. Do I NEED it? No... but I'd love it. I've also considered eventually just getting the conversion parts for it down the line after it's paid off, ect. I've done a lot more in this truck than I thought it'd be able to but, it's still no 4x4.

If you're not going to need the 4X4 then don't get it.

i went 4x4 and im happy as ever. a few time a week i go offroad to go ride dirtbikes so i really needed, i like on a revine next to a creek and i have even gotten stuck at my house. the fact is you can get a locker and all terrians or even mud terrians, but its still not going to be as effective. also if you ever go to the snow enjoy putting those chains on with a prerunner

hahha for sure! 2wheel drive don't cut it here. I been stuck many times in my driveway and had to walk to work becuase of stupid 2wd, haha. The 4x4 worked wonders though but it's still not impossible to get it stuck :)

I used to think....O i don't need 4x4, i wouldn't use it that much...first time i got stuck...IN MY BACKYARD with my frontier "prerunner" i decided at that point i would never buy another 2wd truck. Now granted i have used my 4x4 probably twice since i bought the truck, but thats 2 times i have not been stuck and that is worth the extra duckies i pay every month for my 4x4.

But the worse part of owning a prerunner....."hey man is that 4wd?" --- "no"

Many say they regret getting the 2wd instead of the 4wd. Don't really remember seeing the opposite.

Guys who went from 2wd to 4wd drive say they would never go back to 2wd.

Seems like the only guys happy with the 2wd drive either haven't had the 4wd, or live in an area (south) where they can get by without it.

    That information is worth noting.

    x2.

I live in Southern California, where I would never need it. I do go offroading, but even with a 4x4, I would never do those "hard" trails that require 4x4. I pay too much money to damage my baby. :D The locker is more than enough for me.

Would it be nice to have 4x4? Absolutely. But unless I go up to Big Bear when it's snowing or if I come across a huge mud pit, I would never need it. Chains have worked perfectly for me in the snow and I wouldn't attempt to go through a huge mud pit. Know your limitations. :D

(Luckily all the mud I've come across has been shallow, thus allowing me to plow through it. )

If I lived in an area where it snowed, I would obviously have a 4x4 because I would need it.

I say drop the TRD package and get the SR5 4x4...if it is money thing, it is better to have it just in case... the 4x4 is better than the TRD package

4x4. My old Taco was a PreRunner that I used in the desert so there was a point to have it lighter. Like everyone says, you'll wish you had it. You'd spend more money making the prerunner a pretty reliable truck still not comparable to a 4x4 versus just spending that money otd.

I would have gotten stuck in some wet grass on a hillside just today without 4WD. If you're going offroad at all it's a must imo.

I normally stay in 2wd until I have to have the 4WD, but living on a tobacco & cattle farm 4WD is needed just to get around.
