quick question - would less cross bars drop the cost?

 

Yes if you wanted it. I calculate in about 15$ per crossbar. I got quotes from a few different places and it ranges between $14-17. If you wanted say 4 cross bars you could knock $30 off the total price.

 

You saying it wasn't interesting before?

 

This should clear things up and give you a good idea of what I have in mind. Obviously you could set it up in many different ways.

The product looks sweet and just what I'm looking for for my topper. How exactly is this attaching to the Yakima racks on the camper tops? And are the brackets adjustable because I'm guessing their will be some differences in the spacing between the tracks depending on who installed them.

 

I will have to get the spacing from each person as they will vary. So in a sense each one of the racks for the toppers will be a little custom.

 

Under those steel rails are 6 sets of aluminum rails. sytfu510 has claimed one. The others are up for grabs! The changes I made to the slots turned out great!

For the mock up one you have on your cap in the OP - how high do the rails sit over the cap?

The racks are made to align with each other, on my shell the top of the rail is 4" above the lowest part of the shell on the outside edge. In the middle of the shell it is about 3" putting about 1.75 to 2" between the bottom of the bar and the top of the shell at most points.

 

Gotcha.
My interest lies with this because I'm looking for a way to securely mount my RTT closer to the roof of the cap.
Currently the Thule rail & cross bar system is adequate however the tent bottom is nearly 6" above the roof.
I'm thinking your rack system may be a viable solution to not only drop the tent height down but also enable a more secure mount system in general.
Thoughts?

 

That is my intention for it. I have the thule system now and haven't put my rtt on it for that reason. It was this exact concern that led me to make a matching one for the topper. I definitely think this system is stronger than two thule bars.

 

If it stops raining long enough I hope to get some pictures of my rtt up there tomorrow.

 

Wow ! These racks look great ZSCOTT , a few questions for you :

1. I have a DBLCB SB like yours with a Snugtop shell so I am interested in both racks. I do not have any rails on my shell roof though, I saw in one of your posts that mentioned being able to bolt straight to the top of the camper but would the rack on the camper sit a bit lower than the rack on the roof ?

2. Is the total height of the rack at the center of the roof the same on this as the steel rack in your thread that is only 3" tall ?

3. Does you powder coat shop have a black wrinkle finish available ?

If your tent is like mine with the channels along the bottom this should put the bottom of the tent about 4-4.5" above the roof.

 

I'd actually like to get it as low as possible. closer to 3"

Definitely possible. It would make it so the two racks don't align exactly though.

 

If you were to bolt directly to the cab it would be slightly lower. I would recommend using the Thule rails anyway for a better mounting solution. I have a spare pair of tracks I will include for free to the first person who purchases a topper rack and doesn't have them.
