Did your school make you do peoples taxes while in undergrad?

 

they dont *make* you do anything lol. there is a program though where you can volunteer to do older people's taxes to get experience. and if I wasnt already getting paid to do it i probably would have, but getting paid is more fun

also sucks there is only one under grad tax class! Tax is a huuuge portion of being a cpa, why there is only ONE under grad class on it is beyond me, but there are a couple of grad classes on it so those will be taken for sure

 

We have a whole Tax program and part of it is you have to spend x amount of hours giving free tax help

 

would be nice if you planed on specializing in taxes, but I dont want to do just taxes. the best skill for being a tax expert is being able to do research. you cant know everything, so if difficult topics come up you go to tax sites and the irc and read and read haha. Like the other day, learned something new about employee stock purchase plans haha, because apparently shooting from the hip and guessing is un professional

Yeah, only reason I know all of this is because my roommate's girlfriend did it

She really enjoys it. She interned with KPMG over the summer and now she's getting her Masters

 

well thats a lucky fucking break haha. I dont have a mega firm footing my bill!
however I really dont want to ever work for one of the "big 4"

hell I hate even saying it. I would much prefer to work for a specific business, or work up in a midsized successful firm. But something that big, just another robot on the assembly line

 

Whatcha gonna do with that? Cook meth?

 

im also not done with my under grad either, so I have more learning yet to do. On top of that, GAAP is 15000 pages long, and our intermediate book is only 1500. We dont even scratch the surface of what all is out there to learn, there are so many specific fields you can go into that you then hone in your skill set, you just cant learn it all in school. If my under grad was useless I should be able to hand my work load off to my room mates who did not go to college and after one month on the job they should be able to do just as well as I do right?

 

I have friends all over the place slaving away at the big 4. But you put in your 2-3 years and it definitely helps your resume stand out

 

Im banking on this little firm in in now growing and becoming pretty successful in the next 3-5 years. Growing a firm from nothing is more impressive than being an entry level who ever in mega corp usa IMO. but what do I know haha

 

I'm just saying, you can go anywhere in the country and they'll recognize EY, KPMG, pWc, and Deloitte, not sure if the same can be said for a little firm

 

grad school even does not specialize you for a specific field. you get an extra 1 or two classes in each discipline but its not like you take those classes and are instantly an expert. look all im saying is starting out is rough is all. no need to get technical or specific about it. Grad school or not, there is a step learning curve you just have to roll through

I will say though, would be much easier to take bull shit electives to hit my 150 than some of these no doubt intense grad classes lol
