I was thinking of just heat treating some 4130/4340...I think 1" plate should work ok.

We have a welding job for something like that...think its a nickel coated hardened steel...the other guy is having a hard time because of the pre/post heating...his welds are cracking down the middle.

CrMo steel would be perfect. I was kidding about the other shit. Too brittle for this application. Would probably snap off in a hard pull :D

Oh oh! I know that one! Chromemoly? I hear that is tricky to weld, but if its machined then I don't have to worry about that :)

p.s. I'm leaving now to get my bumper from the powdercoater guys! Hope it looks purdy..

I think the 1" would work OK :D

Personally I wouldn't want a hard snatch pull on the brackets the other guy is selling. Hopefully the bracket bends to shit before anything goes flying.

I heat treated an extra piece of that 4340 I was cutting to RC-40, and flung it a good 15ft...only damage to the piece was a small nick on some threads...left a nice little crater in the floor

Just found out mine is done and getting delivered right to my office, i'm excited :D

snatching with rigid straps is just scary. +1 for a bubba-rope

What do you feel are the downsides to the bracket that the guy is selling? (as Brandon is trying to fab something similar). How do those negatives relate to the TRD Tow hook attached the same way. Same negatives? Define "hard snatch".. I am only thinking of getting pulled out of sand/mud..

hard snatch is like using tow straps with a running start...theres a ton of vids on youtube of recovery with that method with parts getting ripped off or the strap ripping.

bent metal with a needed strength will need to be treated to take abuse, or it'll just break off

Non/very little stretch recovery straps are very harsh, as Mike knows...
The difference between me trying to pull him (pretty much unsuccessfully) out of the sand with my rigid strap and Ron yanking him out with the bubba rope was like night and day. It felt like I was running my truck into a wall. Rons bubba rope looked so gentle, I almost wanted to throw my strap away
    :edit:
Mike beat me to it. Get to work Mike!

hy100 is a really strong steel, inconel is a very strong super alloy, anamantium is what wolverines (from xmen) claws were made from. (the strongest metal in the universe found in asteroids), and unobtainium is metal you can never get ahold of

    This v
Even the stock one I would question pulling too hard on. By "hard snatch" I mean, say you're buried in some sticky mud/clay. It would take a large truck with a running start to yank your 5000+lbs truck out of the mud. The mud has a suction component, so your adding to the overall force needed to pull you out. I wasn't really trying to compare a tow strap pull to a snatch strap pull as they both apply the same amount of force on the bracket, just one is a sharp application while the other is more linear due to stretching.

They will work for what you guys mostly get into. If it was a straight piece bolted vertically to the frame there would be no question as to it being strong enough. The bend is what makes it not "ideal".

Was that whole crossmember milled from a solid block of steel? That can be the only excuse for taking so long :p
