you see those red lines that create a big triangle in theory, that is the area the goalie is allowed to cover the puck, so YES anytime a goalie covers the puck outside that "playable" area it becomes a penalty, its essentially delay of game

 

IIRC, that rule for the goalies was just put in a few years back when the league was on a mission to increase scoring

 

yes but essentially goalies did exactly what Bernier did, they ran out covered the puck and calmed the play, the NHL did not like this, and IMO a good addition to the rulebook

 

i said i know its a rule its just never called, especially in OT, but oh well

 

I like the rule as well. It forces the keeper to play the puck.

edit: it looks like even playing the puck is a penalty

 

obviously you would because your team just got bailed out by it

yah see this is the first time you said "you know its a rule", ive seen it called a few times since implemented this is the first time ive seen a goaltender just charge out and cover the puck in the past couple years

 

theres tons of rules in the book that are not always called, like this one. Its more up to the refs desertion because the goalie can try to get rid of the puck before covering it and then its not "intent"

and thats the key, Bernie just charged out to cover, no intent to actually play the puck, just smother it

 

On the replay too, Kessels shot over the boards hits the top when going over, another botched call. Thats a tough one to see, but this year has been the worst officiating year for all teams in the NHL history hands down. So many bad calls every game

 

I hear ya, however Bernier covered up and froze the puck half way to the blue line. It becomes a pretty fair call at that point no?

if they call it everytime then yes, but I doubt they do. We will see. Its just hard to swallow when the leafs get 2 PPs all game and montreal has a field day with 6 and the last couple were so debatable. But like I said, 1 point is fine, getting too close to care

 

just watched it like 6 times on PVR, looks fucked because on the glass on the check but it hits it clearly
