Happy, I'll do the same, between you and I maybe we can get them to figure it out.

How many miles do you have on your truck?
Does yours only do it around 30 degrees?
Any first thoughts from your dealer?

I heard you guys got pounded with 16" of snow yesterday... my son is leaving tomorrow morning for Crested Butte.

At this point, depending on his state laws, getting pretty close to his choice. OP do NOT accept any money from Toyota unless they're buying the truck back. Don't accept a extended warranty yet either. What you accept now can greatly impact your lemon law rights. Also you don't need a attorney for lemon law.

Yeah- we've had a pretty snowy winter up here, but they usually are. Your son will have a great time!

    I've got 2,400 miles.

My noise happens at freezing and below, then stops after the truck has reached operating temp. (I've only had one day that was especially warm--after work once it was almost 50 degrees, and I could barely hear the noise.) The noise has happened since I bought the truck, (I never did a cold-start test drive--learned my lesson on that one) but I think it has gradually gotten louder.

I only took it yesterday (friday) afternoon. This morning they called me 45 minutes after they opened and told me it was definitely an inner-engine issue. Apparently the first thing they did was to pull the belt to determine if the sound was engine or any of the various pulleys etc. The noise was still there, so engine. The service rep told me he would "get the factory involved" on Monday. ...so I'm waiting.

As a positive note, other than the noise the truck runs as well as i would expect a brand new tacoma to run, and because of all the mods I've done, I'd much rather have the issue fixed than look into a new truck (you said the same thing in one of your first posts on this thread).

Yeah--maybe if we keep each other in the loop one of us can save some time on this fix.

His frustration, this whole thread is describing the long process/event the OP is going through. He has been very understanding and patient throughout it, which is the point.

Hotrod, I bet you're wishing you'd kept the '05 (or was it an '06, can't recall for sure) with all its miles of proving itself reliable. Hoping this gets resolved to your satisfaction ASAP, and will be following for updates.

HHHMMMMM I just had that noise recently... I was like WTF, freaked out and turned my truck off. Waited a minute, started it back up and it went away after a minute. It was cold that night, below freezing. Its the only time it has happened. My truck is a 2010 Supercharged V6 with 45000 miles.

Honestly it sounds like oil starvation to me.

It really does. I can always tell when my truck gets a little low on oil because it starts making a little extra noise. Nothing like it did or like they are saying. But if there was a complete lack of oil on the top end I can see it making a racket like this.

Hmm--that's a good idea--thanks! I'll bring that up when I talk to the shop on Monday.

Hey Hotrod53--how long did it take you to get a loaner initially? I'm wondering how soon I should ask for one if they have to keep my truck for an extended period of time. My commute is 40 miles RT.

My round trip is 44 miles, I got a loaner on day one. As I mentioned, I've dealt with this dealer for 7 years, I always get a loaner no matter what the issue. I would sure ask before I went there, especially if you bought it new from them. You'll probably be without it for a while.

Let them know that it is not the oil pump, it is not the timing chain idler gear and bearing, it's not the serpentine idlers, its not the cam or crank seals, changing the front cover didn't help, and it's not the timing chain adjusters or sliders.

Mine is evident via stethoscope on the lower front part of the block on the drivers side. Maybe if we tag team this issue, we can get a resolution quicker. Maybe we should have the Service Managers get in touch as this goes on? My area rep is already involved, he had made 2 trips to the dealership for my truck already.

That sounds like a great idea. What dealership is your truck at? Mine's at Bighorn Toyota in Glenwood Springs.

OP, I threw you a + rep for dealing with the shit luck you've had and being civil to the dealer about the matter.... Not threatening with court lawsuits right off the bat and sounding like a "That Guy" client people hate to see.

Thanks--when I talk to them on Monday I will explain the similarities between our situations and hopefully my service manager will contact yours. I don't have the same relationship with my dealership that you do, but I have some leverage.

The service department phone number at Bighorn is 970-945-8547
