So far they have been good, but the paint has been sorta weak and thin.

They cut off half of the frame on the newer models so now you only have half the problem!:D

Look under a new one. You probably find surface rust already showing up but it's only that, surface rust. Don't worry about rust, they're fine. A little maintenance done to the frame from time to time (wire brush and a rattle can) and they will last forever.

would my time be better spent just putting a layer of some kind of rustproofing on it ? rather than a steel brush and a rattlecan ?

definitely get an undercarriage coating if you are buying new. My 05's frame is very rusted as well the clear coat on the paint seems to chip off so I have these blotches all over my truck. They aren't bad tho because its silver and you cant c them from a distance.

Had mine since Dec 04, paint is doing well very, I just wax it 3 times a year. Frame can take a beating in heavy snow areas, I undercoated mine last year.

Isn't the clear coat issue covered by warranty?

Frame starting to show signs of surface rust. I'll be getting it undercoated before winter. Will the undercoating splash up much on my white paint?

Are you asking: "Do idiots splash paint on things?"

    ;) Yep! ;)

Find the right guy to do the undercoat & you won't have to wonder.

Thats true. I guess if any do splash it should come off fairly easily. Hopefully they don't get the seats though. Maybe I should do it myself, :)

Where I live, the paved roads get salted to death, the dirt roads get sanded, and my frame gets coated with most of the above half the year. My '05 had surface rust spots on the frame and on some fasteners after about 3 years. I sanded it off and repainted with Rustoleum.

Beware undercoating products. Some work and some can make rusting worse. For instance, certain oil products trap salt and moisture close to the frame, accelerating the rusting process. Do lots of research before you decide.

I'm headed to Zeibart tomorrow with my new 09. I had that done on my 99 Ranger in the fall of 98 and lived in the Pocono Mts of PA till the summer of 03. Lots of long commutes to NJ through lots of salt. I lived in the boon docks and washing the salt off the truck didn't happen till the spring. I only had follow up service done twice while I lived there.

I just traded it in and the undercarriage of the truck was in outstanding condiction. Small surface rust spots where the undercoating had taken some damage is all it had. It really looked great. How much of that great rust protection was due to the undercoating, or due to the metal protection Ford used, I don't know. I do know that it sold me on it and everyone at the dealer that looked at the truck asked me what I did to keep it so nice.

Pity though I have to drive 110 miles to DC to find the nearest dealer.
