rear brakes not working

I went out offroading last night and got stuck in a lot of mud. I sunk up to the frame and had to winch out. Now my rear brakes are not working. I have already pressure washed my truck and cleaned off the hole under carriage. I have looked at the brake lines and nothing looks wrong with them.
Anyone have any suggestions on what to look at or try and do??

I'm not really so good at this stuff, but here's my suggestion, if it were me I would check the rear brake drums themselves and clean them out real good then go from there. Hopefully somebody else will chime in.

 

Do the breaks feel OK? If so you'll need to get the mud out of the rear brakes pull the drums give them a good wash let them dry and put it back together.

 

NO, it doesn't feel like they are working at all. and Im at college with no garage so I might end up taking it to a mechanic up here. I would do it myself if i was back at home..

Best suggestion is to remove the drums and look in the brake area. You can do that typically with just the tools in your truck. Use the jack and the tire tool, remove the tires (one side at a time) and then pop off the drum. Clean out that area and inspect for any problems.

 

I guess my point is does the pedal feel OK or does it go like half way down? If the rear brakes are soaking wet and full of mud they won't work worth a hoot but if the pedal feels funky you may have broken a brake line or the flex hose for the rear brakes.

 

you might have broke the arm that goes to the proportioning valve, or bent it bad.
looks like this and connects to the diff near the center.

 

As already mentioned - take the wheels off, take the drums off ....and clean inside.

You may also want to check the 'adjustment' of the shoes.

Prop valve rod,your drums are loaded with muck,or something got pinched. Up to the frame is pretty deep. Getting dragged out can drag you across all kinds of hidden shit. Gotta look deep into the dirty corners of the truck on occasion when you sink one.

 

Check the brake fuse under the hood, your trailer harness could have gotten wet and blown a fuse.

 

Your brake fuse has nothing to do with your brakes working....

 

My brakes locked up after 4x4 and it was due to the brake fuse.

 

All the brake fuse does is run your brake lights....

 

Not for my case my brakes would lock up randomly, and after I changed the brake fuse and I was good to go.

 

you talking the brake light fuse or the ABS fuse?

For the OP, as others have mentioned, take the drums off and see if they need cleaning.

 

Yeah, the ABS fuse would make more sense haha

 

Burying/loading the towing light plug is a good one to check for also tho'. I keep it loaded with dielectric and the cap snapped in place. Stock back bumper for 99 has some nice molded wiring harness clips already in there to hang the extra on.

 

I took the drums apart and cleaned them out. They were alittle swollen from soaking in the mud for about an hour so I got new brakes and adjusted them. They are working better know.
