    I ran the memtest overnight. Made 5 passes with no errors.

    When the problem first started to happen it would not reboot without me doing F12 on startup and telling it to reboot from the hard drive. I fixed that problem without really knowing what I did to correct it. I think between the registry cleans and the virus scans it was fixed.

    I thought it might be a video card I added so I took it out and put the original video card back in but that did not fix the problem. I also started to remove programs that I do not use or my son added when the machine was located downstairs as the homework machine.

    When I replaced the older machine with a newer one 2 years ago my son took it as his game machine. I had to move it downstairs as the homework machine so I was stuck, once again, with the old machine. Such is the life of a parent.

    Have you updated the firmware on the bios?

    Do you have a spare HD you can try a fresh load of the OS on the hardware? That is sometimes the only way to make sure it is clean.
