4cyl. vs. 6 cyl. could be a different deal. Happy and Hotrod each have a V6... no?

    Just because its 2WD doesn't mean its a 4cyl.

Ok, now you guys got me thinking I should take my 2013 Taco Baja T/X into the dealer to make sure. Mine was built in late May 2013 in Baja, Cali. WTH, I bought a Taco because I thought I'd be getting a truck with a good drivetrain. My previous truck which I still have is a 2003 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with the Job2 4.0 V6 is a victim of the dreaded timing chain tensioners (I already have a '89 F-250 with a 351w/ C6 and 1356 manual transfer case to swap out, going SAS on 37's), gonna be mainly trail rig.

I know I here a strange noise when it starts up and idles at first until it's driven for awhile. How can I take it to the dealer and have them hear the noise if it goes away by the time I get it there? What's the name of the representative that I'll need to talk to about this in my region?

OP don't mean to derail this thread too much so feel free to delete this. My previous car was a 2011 VW gti, while it was a truly fun car to drive mine was plagued with a water pump issue that was well known amongst the enthusiast forums. In the 29k miles that I owned it, I went through 4 water pumps. The car would make a squeaking noise then within weeks I would find a nice big puddle of coolant under the car. I tried everything I could to get the problem fixed and not just bandaid the issue by replacing the pump, Vw essentially told me to screw off. It was obviously a deeper problem within the engine that was causing the cooling system to fail but vw had no interest in fixing it. All that being said I really hope that if there is a deeper issue causing these symptoms, that toyota will come up with a real fix for this.

I think the first post should be updated to contain a list of all things that have been tried (parts replaced etc) to solve the issue by the members ( similar to a post by the OP a few pages back ), that way we can keep track and narrow it down. I plan on taking mine in on the weekend, I do not spect the dealer to solve the issue that day, but I want at least for the issue to be documented.

If the timing chain broke the motor would lock up.

Good idea. I'll be letting my dealer know that there are a number of new tacomas out there doing this.

Hotrod or Happy, did you ever notice any blue smoke at first start up?

    I'm having a similar noise.
    http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd-gen-tacomas/315754-2013-knocking-engine.html

Took my truck a local dealer a few weeks ago and I was told it's normal. So my truck is being dropped off Sunday night so the dealer where I bought it can do a cold start monday morning. Of course mine doesn't do it every cold start so chances are I'll get the "it's normal" again.

I listened to your audioclip--it sounds very different from my truck's sound. To me, that plop-plop sound yours makes sounds different that the normal tacoma "tick."

    Mine doesn't smoke at all.

If they don't object why don't you take a look at the flywheel and see if it has a crack and is flexing [if it is a automatic]. I ran into this on a Ford once and it sounded similar to your recording. I have also found torque converter bolts loose making hard to find noises. The ford seemed to do it mostly when cold also. I don't know what temp had to do with it except that a cold engine runs rougher and tolerances change as components expanded with heat.
I would not want to keep the truck if there is any major problem. With all the components that have to come off to replace the engine what will happen next if a wire or vacuum hose was left loose or pinched or not positioned where it should be to shield it from heat. Get a replacement truck if you can or you will always worry about what will happen next.

Hey fellas, Long time lurker, first time poster. I was actually looking around for leveling kits and came across this thread.....

I have a 2013 DC TRD Offroad that I bought January 2013. Last winter, I noticed the same EXACT sound on cold startups on days under 30 degrees. It would start after about 2 minutes and not stop until 20 minutes. When I researched this last year, I didn't find any threads about it, now I'm finding a bunch. If it helps, it started around 2k miles.

I brought it in a few times, left it overnight, they sprayed the belt, replaced it, replaced the fan, nothing fixed it....they never pulled the motor apart. They called in an area rep, he said the issue was most likely the factory oil used, even went on to say there was a "bad batch". They replaced the oil/filter and the sound nearly went away. After 2 more oil/filter changes, it completely went away. Haven't had it since then(17K miles now). It still bothers me that it did this. First time I ever bought a new vehicle, certainly didn't expect that after paying $30k.

Hope that helps. My service rep is great, would probably be happy to field phone calls about it.

EDIT: Checked my svc history, started at 800 miles.
