I have a 13' dblcab 4.0 6speed 4x4 and I have 23,432 on the odo I have never heard this sound and I've been through 2 winters with this truck and the coldest I ever started the truck at was -34F and not once have I had a problem but I use Valvoline 5w30 conventional oil. Where I'm going with this is my buddy bought his taco about the same time I did and he switched to synthetic oil rite away and at 1700 miles his motor was making the exact same sound as the OP's was maybe that's the issue, just trying out different theories here not :stirthepot: or anything. My buddy got a new truck with his situation by the way.

I'd be very interested in hearing details about this is you would PM me.

UPDATE 3/4/24.... the engine is out and they must have found something. I was told that they are waiting for some decision from the Field Rep and "higher ups". I'm supposed to know more tomorrow.

1sttoywv, I apologize, I missed your question. No mine doesn't smoke but I can tell you that my '06 V6 did that on occasion. Every once in a while it would put out a big puff of blue smoke. I wouldn't worry about it, I traded mine with 175K and it ran as good on the last day as it did on the first day.

TheGrayRider, I have yet to meet this mysterious man of the shadows. He came out when my Camry started drinking oil and he authorized the rebuild. He hasn't done me wrong yet, lets hope that holds up.

FreshDB, I have had my 5000 mile service performed already. it started with the original oil and continued with the new oil. Granted I only have a few miles on the first oil change. It was a concern that my service was performed and the filter pitched as they worked on this thing. It would have been interesting to know if there was anything in the filter had we known then what we know now.... which isn't a whole lot as of yet.

I'm really curious to hear the results...When it's closer to zero outside, I can still hear it very faintly, but I just assumed it was me hearing things. I'll be at my dealer making a big stink if they find something big.

Just saw this thread. Damn, my 2012 TX Pro does this sound in the mornings too. I've got 24k on it and it just started doing this about 2 months ago. Interested to see what the outcome is.

After listening to that sound over and over I bet the lifters are not pumping up until the oil warms up. Maybe 0W30 synthetic may help.

    yup, sounds exactly like mine.

The oil idea sounds pretty promising to me, interested to see what the "higher ups" have to say on the matter. I will be taking mine in the minute they have a definitive answer as I don't want to hear the "its normal, your stupid" speech.

You know- that makes a lot of sense--hotrod53, did they say anything about that?

Also, I wonder what kind of damage that would do to the engine?

Happy, no I haven't heard that yet but my motor is the guinne pig. There is one post up higher that says that different oil may have fixed his.

No sense everyone having their motor torn down, I'm assuming that if there is damage, they'll see it in mine.

The V6 has solid lifters and the four cylinder has hydraulic lash adjusters

Some people are suggesting that the lifters aren't pumping up and causing noise, but there's nothing that does that on the V6. The only thing that tightens up clearance is engine heat. Lash is adjusted by changing out the lifter itself with another lifter of different thickness.

I've had the lash adjusters lose their oil once on my four cylinder when I shut the engine off too quickly after cold start. It took a few seconds to prime and tighten things back up, and that noise was nothing like what's in the videos, not to mention a whole lot louder and cringe-worthy. I'll try never to do that again

Interesting, I had no idea our V6s had solid lifters. I'm surprised they are as quiet as they are.

I've been in a car that collapsed lifters before, you're right, sounds nothing like this. 396 big blocks don't like hitting about 7 grand when you miss a shift.. who knew...LOL
