The sound in the video TCRAWFORD posted in his video is the same as my truck has made. It's happened a couple times this winter but not all the time and it hasn't done it for about a week and a half now. Thought it might do it again this morning to get a video clip since it was 2 degrees but no dice, it was more of a rattle and had a lean exhaust smell (no CEL though). Ran it throughout the day with no noises or issues.

To be fair that actually wasn't my video it was Freshdb's, I quoted it because it is exactly the same noise I am experiencing. The strange part for me is that I get this noise every time I start it up in the morning or after it has been sitting a while. People are stating that it starts around 30F while mine is doing it at 60f even 70f at times.

I agree. I'm confident his engine is OK. Mine sounds just like it during cold weather starts and so does my next door neighbor's '12 Taco....

Unfortunately, you 3 or 4 guys here have a different issue. :(

lemon route sounds like best deal. had an 03 accord coupe with tranny problems. they had my car for about 2 months. honda engineers trying to find problem. brand new model. no rebuilt tranny available. they had to send for replacement tranny from factory.

car died at 131k. about 100k after swap. car never the same.

I run Amsoil in mine with 5w-30. I'm going to try the 0w-30 route and see if that has any influence on the noise. I'm changing oil this weekend and will keep you all posted.

Curious to see if it cuts it down for you, here's what they had stated/done on my 3rd time bringing it in. Does it look like they experimented with synthetic(5W30P)? All changes since have been conventional.

I'll give my input. I has a similar noise but not as loud at ~10 degrees. Noticed it after i changed my oil last. Still had 2000 miles left on that oil change, but decided to change again to get rid of the noise. This time I used a genuine Toyota filter and what i have been Mobile 1 5w-30. Now I don't notice the noise anymore. I think with not toyota filters and its cold, the oil has a hard time pushing through the non toyota filters.

Interesting. I wonder what Toyota is going to do about this since a few of us are having the same problem.

Could this be an oil pressure issue and oil not getting to where it needs to be? Oil weight being an issue as well?

It actually sounds louder and worse on the video than in real life, its sounds like the video posted a few pages back but lower volume.

I live in PR temperature this morning should have been about 70 degrees when I took the video, I hope it is nothing major, truck feels fine. Let me know if you get any feedback from the dealer, I plan on taking mine in Saturday (hopefully)

If I was having all these problems, changing oil and filters and what's going on with these dealers I'd sure as hell get a free test kit and send some oil from my engine to Blackstone Labs and have it checked for damage. It's the best $25 you'll ever spend.

Well it's official, a new short block is going to be installed. They really don't know what is wrong with it until it is completely torn apart. Apparently the issue holding it back was not knowing exactly what is causing the noise and in the end it could even come back in a new engine if undiagnosed. It was even thrown out there that this may be a normal noise for this engine..... not buyin' it, neither was anyone else.

I assumed based on my recent conversation that the motor was out, I stopped in today and it was in fact still in the truck ready to pull. The tech was told to stop until told otherwise based on upcoming decisions. My entire bed is full of motor parts, skid plates, shrouds, a radiator, you name it.

As of the moment that I left the dealership there was no decision, it was made right after I left. The decision was made to install a short block, I fought for a 100K warranty but was told that the short block was the first step. I strongly disagreed with the decision not to get the warranty up front since at 37,000 it could all go wrong and it would be on me. My dealer said that if Toyota doesn't give the 100K warranty, they will. I have no reason, based on my relationship, that this will not be the case.

I saw a few raised eyebrows today when I said that between two forums as of this date, there have been 12,000 hits on this issue! The power of TW  I also found out that my emails threatening to lemon it have been passed on to the Area Manager.
