Tactical shotguns

My bedside gtg are a 12ga. Mossy 500 8rd. Persuader 20in.barrel full stock and a HK usp compact .45 but feel like I need more courage to use them if I need to.

 

Yea I keep my moss 500 8rd by the bed. I've got the black hawk furniture on it. Best for my situation cause bird shot won't over penetrate the walls and put my daughter at risk.

My second gun is my RIA compact 1911. But its my backup

I know it's only a matter of time before I hear something like this in a HD shotgun conversation. You ever place some sheets of drywall back to back to back and test that yourself? After all, your daughter's life is at stake. That stated, even if I lived in the sticks by myself and had no concerns of over-penetration I still would NOT choose birdshot as a SD round. Ever.

BTW, with this response we're starting to get into why my shotguns would be the last go-to weapons for HD/SD. There are FAR better options with everything taken into account. The urban legend of the HD shotgun run wild.

 

I do agree with a lot if what you are saying.

I do not understand using bird shot as a HD round. I but the HD rounds that have 3 00buck and a slug in it. So it isn't as bad as if I was to just unload bird shot in my house.

 

Some people seem to think that birdshot in a 12ga is fool proof and completely offsets the #4 rule of firearm safety: Be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

Don't even get me started on the next urban legend that you don't even have to aim a shotgun because it's a magic boom stick that neutralizes threats so long as it's out of the safe and horizontal when you pull the trigger.

 

Remington 870 tactical for me. I also keep an AR beside of it though. Depends on situation.

 

Help me understand a situation in which a less maneuverable, louder, substantially higher recoil, more wall over-penetration, less capacity and less ability to customize to your needs would be preferred in a HD situation.

 

I definitely would pick a 12 Ga over an AR for a defensive setup (and do). What's great is that this isn't arfcom so I feel absolutely zero need to defend my choice to anyone.

 

Never mind. Not worth it. I'm sure my years of first hand experience and testing will just be called impossible or I'll just be chastised as trying to force my ideas on others regardless of facts just because they fly in the face of internet opinion. Enjoy your shotgun.

 

I don't think there's any reason to get angered by any of this. There are a lot of misconceptions about the different types of guns and their use in home defense. Not everyone wants to be educated, or wants to believe that person they trust could be wrong. When they want to, they'll get training, or ask for proper advise, and then get training.

The short and skinny though is... any gun is good for home defense. As long as you know how to use it properly, in any given scenario, in and around your home. Know your chosen firearms's strengths and weaknesses, and how to workaround them safety and effectively.

Specifically to shotguns though.... Pump's require extra training and practice for use under stress, and have much more recoil than a semi-auto. Shotguns are loud, and will probably stun the crap out of you the first time you fire one indoors without ear protection. Long guns are very cumbersome to manipulate indoors, even the 16" and 18" variety.

But they can be used effectively, and may even be the best choice for you. Cost is an issue, but if you insist on a shotgun I would only recommend the semi-auto variety. They are very reliable today, require less manipulation, and have much less recoil. That said I have a 18" Mossberg 88 as my 2nd go to in the house, hehe.

Also, if you put a lot of rounds down range, a pistol grip on a shotgun is a terrible idea.

 

I wouldn't mind having a 930 SPX with a ETA Rhino Rail and Bobcat grip, Nordic extension tube, and Mesa Urbino Grip/Stock.

That being said, I wouldn't pay for one, nor would it be very practical for anything other than looking badass and having fun.

Right now I have a Mossberg 500 with adjustable stock, pulled the wooden dowel out of the mag so it holds 5+1. Ordered a 18.5" barrel over the weekend. I keep that next to my nightstand and my Glock 17 9mm on my nightstand. Also have an alarm and a 110lb lab, so if intruders ignore the alarm and get past the dog then I'll grab the 12g and leave the 9mm for the wife - easier for her to shoot.

 

Not tactical but an amazing shotgun. Replica WWII trench gun......and to anyone that know anything. About these guns the answer is yes I also have the bayonet for it too

This isn't my first go to in a home invasion. it would be my second. First thing I would reach for is my xd tactical 45. It setup with a light and laser. And I'm well trained with it so I'm gonna grab it first cuz the function of the gun is familer and set into my brain. Its just instinct working that pistol

The barrel I mentioned earlier came in today. Just put it on along with a heat shield. Ordered the heat shield a while ago not knowing it wouldn't fit on the barrel the gun came with. It fits on this barrel though.

 

I don't want to get into a pissing contest with you by any means and while I agree with what you are saying mostly. But I don't live in a shitty apartment somewhere. All of my walls are hardwood and yes I've tested bird shots penetration of the same material used.

And believe me if you question the lethality of bird shot then I'll bet you've never seen the damage it can cause in person.

Again. Not calling you out. But I've been around guns my whole life and am pretty proficient and trust my and my families safety with my shotgun bedside
