Remember, once you go past 30 days without the use of your truck in 18 months...

It is officially a lemon. If it were me I'd lemon it and get my money back.

Yes thats exactly what i said in a previous post on this thread.Once you eliminate all pulley and tensioner issues and the sound goes away when engine warms up it points clearly to piston slap.I am wondering if anyone with v-6 tacomas previous to 2012 are experiencing this issue.i have a 2007 and am not experiencing this even at -37 F.I am asking this cuz if touota has changed piston design by reducing the size of the piston skirt ( to improve gas mileage) it could cause piston slap. And i say BS to the statement by the dealer that this is normal,it certainly is not normal.

With all the people posting looks like 2013-2014 thing.
Another plus of owning 2007 :p
I dont know if this is piston slap. that buzzing noise on the OP video does not sound like piston slap at all. Other videos the same. More like lose tension-er on timing chain, allowing timing chain to vibrate. Or oil pump but than again bad oil pump would be easy to troubleshoot by simply hooking up the gauge to check pressure. The only thing that can make that kind of sound and still keep truck driving would be timing chain hitting crap.
If the swap just the block and reuse tensioners sound may come back.

What's a short block? Is it the same as the engine block?

Basically the rotating assembly, block with crank, cam, piston, rods, and bearings. Everything else like alternator, intake, ect will be reused.

This could satisfy my concern since all rotating parts with bearings are factory assembled.

If this noise should come back, or it's in for the same thing again.. austa la vista! My dealer was very understanding regarding my concerns, once the electrical, cooling, A/C, transmission are disconnected, anything is possible yet shouldn't be considered as imminent failure. This is why I'm expecting a warranty.

I have a '14 and I have not heard any odd noises yet, but I only have 1800 miles on it and live in SoCal, so it isn't getting anywhere near freezing temps.

Patience prevails..glad you finally got an answer as to what's gonna happen. Once the new block is installed it's gonna be tuff to get the noise of the old one out of your head...I know I'd be neurotic listening for it...good luck.

Thanks for the explanation--I agree--these parts plus a 100K warranty would satisfy me too.

I agree with the idea of the tensioner/s and or the timing chain/s being bad and that their not getting enough oil to them fast enough. if this is the case then a short block replacement wouldn't fix the problem unless they used new chains and tensioners, just my opinion.

I'd be really pissed if I went to the dealer and saw all the parts sitting in my brand new trucks bed (I haul stuff all the time but very careful how it's loaded). Please keep us updated.

Well its easy to check if its coming from Timing chain and tensioners, they can remove that small rectangular cover and the noise will be crazy loud. When chain is in correct tension any vibration on it is taken by dampers. If it is loose it will make all kinds of racket. If it was problem with oil pump I would guess engine would be dead by now, and smoking oil. Since its only the noise I bet that chain is just vibrating. Question is what has changed, could be some crappy tensioners, dampers or chain.

Well one step closer to a "fix", I hope the new short block fixes the issue. Short block and 100k warranty would do the trick for me, unless I could squeeze out a lifetime warranty...

I sure hope that you are correct about what comes with the short block

If they put the same heads, timing parts, and oil pump on the new block

You could run into the same problem

This is a picture of a short block for sale - 1GR-FE

    Crank, rods, and pistons only

no cylinder heads, cam shafts, oil pump or timing parts

    Do dents and scratches count?
Don't think I would be satisfied with a short block. I would be with a factory assembled engine. But, at least they are trying to make this right. +1 for the dealer standing behind the truck with an extended warranty.

By the time the truck is back on the road warmer weather may be setting in you may not hear it again until next winter. That may knock you out or getting a new one under lemon law. If there is a chance of getting a new one under lemon law now I would do it now. Just think of what it will do for your trade in price in a few years when they car fax it and see all the engine issues. Devalued!

You are correct. A long block would include heads, and most likely cams and timing components / timing cover, just no manifolds, etc.
