Right now my truck is pretty much stock mechanically. I want to put on some long tube headers and a new exhaust system. I'm unsure of what models I'd like to use. I'd like for it to be louder and more aggressive, but not sound like a ricer. Any ideas that anyone has would be nice. Also, I'd like to do the swap myself. How hard is it to do that? Thanks!

Time for a shameless self plug http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2n...ow-2012-complete-dtlt-urd-y-pipe-install.html

Anywho, it is relatively simple to change out your exhaust components. If your capable with a welder then doing the full install should be a cinch. I suggest giving yourself about 8 hours of time to do the whole swap. Give or take a few hours. If your handy with a wrench then the instructions included with your LT headers should be sufficient. Take a read through my post to see what can of worms you're about to open. The 08 model you have should be relatively similar to my 12. You might not have to replace your top row of studs as your exhaust manifold doesn't have the smog/air injection tube. Your selection of Long Tube headers is fairly short, so your decision on what one to pick will come down to personal preference. Some of these brands are for the 4.0 only: Doug Thorley, JBA, URD. Choice of Y-pipe is just about as small. Find the brands you like and then give the ol' searcharoo function on this site to see what other people think about them.

A quick note on 'rasp'. If your pushing the 1GR-FE model, then you will get the rasp if you delete your Cats. I would suggest looking into getting a Resonator installed in front of your Muffler of choice to help slow down the exhaust 'puffs' and even out your overall exhaust tone to negate almost all of the raspy sounds at WOT. There are plethora of topics on this forum about which muffler sounds best, but those are all opinions of highly subjective individuals. Bottom line, it's your truck. Have fun with it. I think you'll be happy with the sound regardless of what setup you choose.

    Best of luck friend.

    Some stuff...
Well I REALLY like my TRD cat-back, and don't think it sounds ricey at all but many will weight in with their own opinions. I heard my exhaust for the first time recently outside the truck when someone was driving it. It sounds even better outside than inside, and again not like a ricer with a fart-cannon. Bear in mind it is a V6 and will never completely sound like a V8.

Good luck, and you might kick up some searches on exhausts - many-o-threads on exhausts and some even have embedded links with samples of the different setups and how they sound.

^^^Agree just put mine on 2 days ago and I love the sound of the TRD exhaust. Did a lot of reading, searching and listening to exhaust clips and decided to pull the trigger on the TRD and glad I did.

I replaced mine with a 3" AFE from the headers back...with the AFE cold air intake I gained 51 pounds of torque and 39 horse power!!! For me the sound is great!! Not to much but enough!!!!

I finally heard a TRD exhaust the other day and I have to agree. It sounded good. If I were in the market for a new exhaust I believe that is the one I would go with.

I've got Aero exhaust. They are kind of tuned especially for the v6's like tacomas, 350z, etc. They sound great. Loud, but not like a raspy flowmaster sound. I've actually gotten positive comments on my exhaust from some random people. TRD stuff is good too.

OP you just gotta listen to sound clips man. Everyone will have their own preference when it comes to the exhaust. So many choices.

The installation is fairly easy, removing the old parts will take the longest depending on the condition of the bolts and nuts. If you are interested in the Doug Thorley Y Pipe, I have one for $200 and I'm in Houston. It's welded and ready for installation.
