the rear brakes are self adjusting. if the shoes are worn enough, they self adjust when the parking brake is applied.

the star wheel is used to back off the shoes

on the tacos the parking brake adjustment is under the center console (centre if your eh)

the Toyota drum brakes are self adjusting. I'll find some good literature and post it if you would like.

Yes the drums are self adjusting, i was told to back the adjustment down but not all the way, then after everything reinstalled, back down the street braking to a complete stop every 5-8ft and they will adjust them selves.

It's actually self adjusted via the parking brake. Driving in reverse will do nothing with the self adjustment.

    When installing new shoes

    • with the drum on, adjust star wheel until it the shoes are against the drum and the wheel will not turn anymore: then back off 15 clicks

    • adjust parking brake to 7-9 clicks

this explains it quite well :D

Toyota used a dual servo system. In this system there is no "leading" or "trailing" shoe. Each shoe has its own pivot opposite from the wheel cylinder. the only real link between the two shoes is the wheel cylinder.

No matter which direction you stop from the shoes do not shift position. There is no motion to operate an adjuster.

The adjuster in a dual servo system is linked to the parking brake.

When you operate the parking brake a mechanical lever wedges the two shoes apart just like the hydraulic cylinder would. If the brakes are out of adjustment there will be a large movement in this linkage before the shoes reach the drum. This is what moves the adjuster wheel. If the brakes do not need adjusting there is not enough movement in the linkage to turn the adjuster wheel.

The FSM says to adjust the brakes by cycling the parking brake until you no longer hear the adjusters at the wheels clicking.

With a dual servo system no amount of driving forwards or backwards while jamming on the brakes will adjust anything. The only mechanism which acts on the adjuster is the parking brake linkage.

I also did it with the parking brake.

I was told if i brake gradually and hard enough, it'll kick the rears into usage....which i know holds true when going in forward but i'm not sure about reverse

No worries, thank you for the information
