'09 PreRunner access cab speakers

Hi guys, I just got my '09 Tacoma with stock stereo, single disc player and reading everything I can on here and everywhere to learn the best way to upgrade my system. One thing I don't see discussed yet are the rear speakers in the 09 access cab. Mine are mounted in the ceiling, not the rear cab doors and if I wanted to replace those I would have to tear down the whole overhead. Should I just bypass those and cut holes in the doors?

Now that I've read a few more posts, maybe I don't need rear speakers anyway since I don't have a double cab. A nice pair of fronts and a sub should do me good....

 

imo the best way to upgrade is to replace the speakers in the factory locations due to airspace, speaker mounting depth, and other mechanical parts that could get in the way of your intended location.

My best recommendation is to first upgrade the stereo/head unit because most aftermarket units have many filters and auido enhacement that far surpass the factory stereo's performance. The stock speakers my surprise you at how much better they sound, and then if the system still isn't up to your standards, then i would start upgrading the factory speakers. I would do the front speakers first since they are more dominate when sitting in the front seat.

 

Has anyone replaced their rear ceiling speakers in an '09 access cab yet?

 

i gotta believe, the holes are in the door to mount speakers, however, since you don't have holes in the panel you might have issues with the sound getting thru.

anybody got pics of what the 09 rear speakers look like??? or the panels?

 

It's weird because there are no grilles or holes in the ceiling but that's where the sound is coming from. The surface of the headliner is smooth, no bumps or other signs that there is any way for sound to get through. I'm just more curious than anything because I'm sure there's other guys out there with the same thing. Even the salesman didnt know where the rear speakers were. Also, there are no grilles in the back access doors for speakers...

 

throw in a nice head unit, some 6x9 components in the front doors and and amp and sub and it should sound pretty sick. you may like these too:

Uglykid2: What's the location(s) of the 09 Tacoma Access' ceiling speakers?

I can't find any speaker cutouts or perforated holes for these spkrs.
Aren't these necessary for "clear", sound wave passage?

 

You would think so and the volume coming from those back speakers is faint compared to the front speakers. (Gee, I wonder why?) This one aberration is the only complaint I have about my new truck except for the unbelievably cheap factory speakers they put in there! For now, I gave up on having rear speakers because I don't have the expertise to rip out the ceiling panel to replace them. I did replace the front speakers and tweeters and that made one heck of a difference. I also added an amplifier and connected a Kenwood powered subwoofer to those rear speakers and really, I don't miss them at all.

I can't believe Toyota covered up the ceiling speakers! What good are speakers w/o cutouts / perforated holes.

Guess I'll have to follow you and replace the 4 front spkrs, add amp +
subwoofer.

Note: Ordered a tonneau top from AutoAnything.com and stainless
tube steps from runningboard.com. They were both reasonably priced.

 

I looked into this a couple months ago, you're right the ceiling speakers suck ass. One solution would be to back date you rear door interior panels. Like someone else said the openings for the speakers are still there. More money I know but the doors would remain "stock" versus mounting the speakers on the door panel. Tough choices, I'm still working on other items before audio updates.

 

they really bit the big one on the stereo i just got my x and the stereo took a crap less than 300 miles. the dealer is replacing the 1st defective unit with a fresh POS when i get the funds its all coming out - the headliner BS it was a good idea but they let a non audiophile impliment it so its crap. please toyota dont go soooo f'ing cheap

 

i just got an 09 access as well 2 weeks ago and dont have any speakers in the rear doors. I tried doing some research online about rear speakers in the headliner and couldnt find anything.
Just got my system in delivered today...Alpine 9886 head unit, infinity kappa 60.9 component speakers for the front doors powered by a mtx jh202
Going to start the install tommorow!!

 

There are a couple of threads here where folks put speakers in 09 access cab rear wing doors. Have a look around or search. I'll look later and try to post a link. It is doable. The only small problem is needing to get the speaker wires to the new location. Everyone I have seen do this has just run new wire from the head unit. It would be nice to find a way to tap the roof speaker wires and drop them down. But.... I am not sure all this is worth it. If you upgrade the fronts and add a sub, maybe just keep the roof speakers as is for a little rear fade imaging. That's where I am heading with my 09 access cab. Already have the h/u in and trying to decide on a good way to put in a sub w/o taking up my cargo space or blocking the across the truck aisle. Almost there.....

 

The headliner material is pretty much "sound transparent", like a cloth speaker grill on home speakers.

 

JL Audio has a Stealth Box for the '09, but you end up losing 90% of the center console storage area .

 

The lights in my 09 radio don't work half the time until you tap on the front of the radio...and sometimes in just shuts off completely
