I'm also looking into getting a cap and having a hard choice deciding on carpet or not. I'm planning to sleep in it a few times the summer but it's main use will be for transporting my Lab who really enjoys to swim and get muddy and stuff. I also hunt a lot and concerned about blood from large game.
Looks for some opinion's. Thanks so much

If you sleep in the cap , carpet will help keep the roof from condensating

This is a Raider hirise canopy, the extra height is good for bikes, camping. It's a basic model, $1400, no carpet, and I put on the rack. I think the carpet would get dirty and smelly after a while, and the rack works great with my 12" kayak.
I spend a lot of days camping out of it, and it works well for my purposes.[/ATTACH]

My Leer 180 is fully carpeted, good for when I'm back there and for when my dogs are back there....helps a lot with condensation. Only the cap is carpeted, so no issues with blood from game, I have the OEM rubber bet mat for that. It's had deer, ducks, geese & grouse back there.....never causes any damage to the carpet. The carpet is marine grade and is applied with marine adhesive......I pressure wash it once a year on a warm summer day and it cleans and dries nicely and shows no sign of separation. Never had any issues with odor. Looks as new as as it did day 1.

I remember looking at the snug tops but I can't remember why I stopped. Either, they were too expensive or not available around me. I'll have to check again.

Thats very useful information. What did you end up spending on it when you bought it if you don't mind me asking?

Yeah, when I look up the closest dealer on Snugtops site, they give me a dealer in Montana... I live in Virginia. Not very helpful

Memory foam matress might help back there, don't need any thick ones. I can imagine what happens when you roll off those mini air beds.

Wow. That is an excellent price. Was that from a dealer or did you buy used. If I could find that in my trucks color for $1300 I would buy it in a heartbeat.

I'm about to sell my explorer and with that money, I'll be paying off some debt but I should have a little bit left over so I'm going to start getting quotes. So far what I've gathered from this thread and other reading is the Leer 180 is the way to go. Originally I wasn't planning to get the Carpet but sounds like its a pretty good investment along with the hinged front window and the Yamika rack. What about the side windows. I was leaning towards the sliding windors. Does anyone have experience with these? Would you recommend them?

I'm in the same dilemma. I'm leaning more toward the sliding windoor option. Seems to be a great way to access stuff in the cap without climbing it.

The cap itself was $1360 new from a dealer. The Yakima components (excluding the mounting plates) were pulled of my previous truck (they were only 3 yrs old). I think the 1A towers and crossbars were almost $300. So I guess total price was closer to $1700 in the end.

I went with the standard sliding windows with screens as I usually have 2 dog crates back there, so there's not much of a need to reach in to grab stuff with the bed being only 5'. I keep all that stuff back towards the tailgate or in the back seat. I put canoe paddles in the middle b/ween the crates.

I am considering a bed platform to get the crates up some (extra height with the Leer 180 helps) and to take advantage of the space underneath....and for sleeping on.

A friend has the ARE mid rise version ( can't remember the model #). The 2 are pretty identical in fit, quality and finish.

I got the Leer 180 with sliding windoors because I put my dog in back and also for truck camping. I would highly recommend these. Have had toppers without carpet and as Oz said they condensate and will drip on you when camping back there. I think the headroom of the 180 is much needed. I took a 15' canoe on a 1000 mile trip with no problems. IIRC I paid $2100 for mine. Was the "Adventure Package" I think. 2 Led lights, carpet, cargo net, Thule roof rack and one bike attachment. I didn't get the fold down front window. I take my cap on and off frequently so cleaning inbetween isn't an issue for me. I have a pulley set up that I just back under and lift it off using the rack. Love my Leer 180, money well spent. I've gotta drop it on tomorrow because I'm heading to the Pocono's to do some skiing. Love having all that dry secure storage space.

Here's the only pic I have from my trip to the Adirondacks. I'll try to take some more when I get it put on today.
