I have a 2005 Double Cab Long Bed Pre-Runner, V6, Automatic 2WD. It is completely stock, and just turned 138K miles.

Over the last week or so, when accelerating away from a dead stop on a partial throttle, I get a little shudder during upshifts. Sometimes it's between 2-3, and other times it's between 3-4. It's also intermittent. . .

However, if I put my foot into the throttle a little more, it never produces the shudder at all. Nor do I get any of the "axle windup" issues that have been talked about in other threads.

I should also mention that this is a work truck, not a play toy, and I often have 400 - 600 lbs in the bed during the week, which I know will change the driveshaft angle.

Any suggestions? (Besides ". . . just keep putting your foot in it!")

Update: First, a correction. My Tacoma is a 2007 Double Cab Long Bed PreRunner 2wd with the TRD Sport pkg, and has just turned 142K mi.

Back to the transmission: I had the fluid changed by the Toyota dealer where I bought the truck. They no longer do a full flush, citing some Californication environmental wacko regs!?!?!? After I got home, I added some LubeGard ATF Protectant that was recommended here on TW in a different thread.

Result: The shudder is definitely reduced, but still shows up periodically, especially when making a LH turn (like coming off a freeway off-ramp into the left turn pocket on a green light then beginning to accelerate through and coming out of the turn.)

I also requested that the driveshaft slip joint be lubed, but was told that on my truck the slip joint is inside the transmission and lubed by the ATF. Huh? Never heard that before. . .

While underneath the truck adding the LubeGard, I took a couple pics of the driveline. The center support looks familiar, but I've never seen the weird-looking can-shaped thing on the end of the transmission that the driveshaft bolts to. Enlighten me, please!

Where do I go from here?

Let me start by saying this is my first post ever in any forum. Forgive me if I screwed something up.

I believe I recently have come upon a solution to my shudder problem and wanted to share.

I've got an '09 DC 4wd with 170k. I've had a shudder that's gotten progressively worse over the last 2 years or so. It seems to happen between 20-30 mph. Hard to notice a consistent gear change or rpm. When it started, it could've been mistaken for bumps in the road but has gotten so bad that my wife's face shakes when it happens and she's in the passenger seat. Haha.

Anyway, I had the carrier bearing replaced with one from napa, I had all three u-joints on the drive shaft replaced and still had the shudder. I was terribly disappointed. Went back to the mechanic and he rode around with me (of course it never happens as bad when the mechanic is in the truck) but said he thought it had to do with the solenoid and torque converter in the transmission. He put a $10 bottle of "Dr. Tranny Shudder Fix" in the transmission and I haven't had any more problems in 2 weeks. No shudders that I've noticed. Worth mentioning, I had the tranny power flushed about a year ago and that didn't fix it. Hope this helps someone!!

Yes. I'll tell you what he did from start to finish. Not sure what parts of it are necessary.

First he unscrewed some sort of drain plug on bottom of the tranny and a small amount of fluid came out. I think he was planning on putting the shudder fix in there but realized it wasn't the right spot. Then he put that plug back in and went up on the passenger side of the transmission and unscrewed something else (I was on the driver's side and couldn't see exactly what he unscrewed) and squeezed the small tube of shudder fix in. Put the cap back on and lowered the truck off the rack.

I didn't notice anymore shudders from the very beginning.

Let me know if I can clear this up more. I know little to nothing about transmissions.

    Thanks
    Ryan

Your seal is screwed up and you are leaking transmission fluid. Look at the oil drip on that metal can. Thast tranny fluid. There was a TSB to fix this seal. Did you had it done ? Also pre-runers have no zerks for u-joints that means at around 100 k miles those u joints are pretty much junk and I would suggest changing them for new ones. Hope that helps.

Are those u-joints easy to replace? is there a diy with pictures on how to do those? I have a pre-runner with 140k miles and it's starting to feel a little shudder when I take off from a complete stop. I already got my tranny seal on order and will try and replace that in the next month or two so might as well do the u-joints while I got the shaft removed. My truck is leaking oil from the front crank seal and also from the tranny housing extension....leaking from both ends :p
