Thanks Ctryboy, exactly what I was looking for.
I think it also stops the automatic "recirculate" from happening.
    Good job.....Larry

I just finished this mod, I'll be test driving it later. While I had the glove box out I cleaned the cabin air filter. It's amazing how much stuff it had in it after only 16K miles.

Good news guys! My last tank of gas, I left my defrost off and I got 18.5mpg. That's a new record for me. My previous record was 17mpg.

Get an AFE Pro Dry filter! I'm up to 20mpg/tank from 17-18mpg/tank! Removing the secondary air filter might help too, but that came off a long time ago so.....

Thanks CtryBoyInMT, works great for me. I went lazy and just cut the wire 2 inchs from the connector and heat shrinked both end of the wire. If need be I'll splice the wire back together...I just don't see the need.

I have been told that the AC compressor does not lower your MPG. I'm getting a little over 19 MPG combined driving with the AC on / summer driving. Earlier in the spring less AC needed...my MPG was never higher than that.

MPG varies so this is not a scientific test but more of an observation. However...like I was told that some test(s) have been done and verifies my observation.

    Dunno....

The rule of thumb it that over 40 MPH it's more efficient to drive with the AC on and the windows up verses having the windows open. At less than 40 the AC puts more drag on the engine than the resistance of having the windows down. If you're just driving around town you'll get higher MPGs if you can turn off the AC and be comfortable enough with the windows open.

At all speeds it's most efficient to have the windows up and the AC off.

You can feel the truck lug down when the AC compressor comes on. There is no question of losing power and mpg with AC on. But yes, still do it at highway speeds vs rolling down the windows. This darn defroster this is something that Toyota is proud of. The window sales sticker calls it 'AC linked defroster'. No thank you. It may be why so many of us get mpg less than we should.

It's been like that for years. My 98 Corolla turned on the AC when I switched to full windshield. Sure helps clear the fog off on a hot, humid night or day. Nice thing about the car though was that it was ONLY the windshield-only setting and not windshield/feet and windshield-only like the truck. I could stil do windshield/feet in the car during winter months without the AC coming on and making it take even longer to warm up. But since this feature is 10 years old I've learned to live with it. Truck rarely leaves the vertical "feet only" position since that directs air to almost all the other vents anyway (windshield, feet, and front side ones). Warms/cools the entire cab better than the other settings AND clears the windshield.

all the way down? or just part way down. Just part way down...or cracked is way more efficient than ac on.

I',m 1-2 mpg worse with the ac on. I also need to do the mod to correct this toyota thing, but it seems like a hard mod and and scares me..enough of my rant on the subject..its sucks!!

The lower the windows the more resistance.

The mod was easy, easier than it looked in fact. Just follow the walk thru and look at the pictures. The toughest part was getting the wire out of the connecter. I was really tempted to just cut the wire and tape the end but that would have made it a bit more work to undo the mod (Not that I'm likely to).

My parents had a '70 Dodge Coronet 440 that the A/C turned on with the defrost - I live in the Houston area - KING of HUMIDITY!

This is good to know for when I get my Tacoma. I seem to recall seeing the "A/C Linked Defrost" on the sticker when I was browsing around at the dealer, but didn't really give a second thought about what that meant. Seems like a stupid feature to me, but then I'm one of those guys who hates letting computers make decisions for me.... I'm quite capable of cracking a window or turning on the A/C if it gets too foggy, thank you. My vents are always set to either windshield, floor, or both (Not too fond of having the front vents blowing towards me). This mod should save me a buck or two. Thanks.
