synthetic 75w 90 manual tran oil awesome!!!

just changed to mobil 1 manual tran oil yesterday. highly recomend this upgrade!!! easy as pie with the fantastic 30k maintenance write up. 3 quarts

75w 90 , 15/16 inch (22 mm i believe) socket , and about 15 to 20 min. very noticeably smoother shifting, supposed mpg boost. this is the first manual that i have owned, and i love it!! ( learned to drive stick the hard way, on a ford f 450? 550? dumptruck.) now when i drive my gf's auto v6 suv it feels so sluggish, compaired to my 4cyl manual. on my way to work today i saw an old lady slip and fall. my first reaction was to laugh, but then ithought, what if i was an ant and she fell on top of me? then it didn't seem so funny. - jack handy

 

I agree completely. However it took a week or two for my shitfing to get smoother, but definietely got a nice MPG boost after my 30 K maintenance. also I think it is a 24 mm, but I am not positive

 

thanks, couldn't remember 22 or 24. so , yours got better over time? thats great. before i did the change i called the dealership to make sure it wasn't synth in already. they told me it was dyno. have you done the front and rear differentials or the transfer case yet? if so any noticeable difference?

 

i highly recommend doing the rest of the oils now did all of mine overall much smoother and a little less vibration

 

I have switched EVERYTHING over to synthetic, both diffs, manual tranny, transfer case, and engine. I average around 24 mpg when my truck is rated for 22 highway

hate to pester you ,but will my 09 access cab 4x4 need the additive when ido the diffs?

Don't worry about pestering, questions are how we learn! But no you only need some quality gear oil. The only diffs that need additive is the TRD sport models with the limited slip

looked at your 'my build' nice truck. we have pretty much the same goals for getting max mpgs while still having rough road capability . i drove 20,000 miles last year for work, so mpg is huge for me. iam a millwright, we basically do precision tuning of large equipment ie. turbin engines at powerplants and different machines at steel mills. great job if you like wrenching onstuff and dont mind being covered in grease. iam also getting the afe pro dry and the dynomax eventually . already removed secondary filter.

 

Ya I have accepted the fact that it is a 4 banger and realized I got it for a reason. Most mufflers make it sound like a civic with a fart can and the ones that might sound powerful actually lose power (example: flowmaster). So I am getting the dynomax because it is the only muffler I have confidence in performance gains. My headers should be on by the middle of next week thanks greatly to another member on here. My theory is with a handful of extra ponies with the headers and muffler, my engine wont have to work as hard.

As long as I don't get the "More power heavier foot syndrome"

I may be wrong but i heard 09 models have no lsd in the axle, they are traction control lsd(brakes), I'd check it out before u add additive

 

Correct! No LSD additive in 09's. Not even mentioned in the maintenance section of the owners manual.

 

X2! I switched all that I could to synthetic - engine, transmission, and rear differential. Everything rides smooth.

 

Are you talking about a Mobil Manual Trans "specific oil"? I did not know Mobil manufactured such a fluid, or is it Mobil 1 Gear lube? I understand your enthusiasm although you might want to hold off until Winter gets here. I changed my 09's last winter with Amsoil MTG and had to drain it due to inability to shift from 1st to second in cold weather. Ended up putting original fluid back in and topping off with Valvoline 75w90 Dino. I was hoping to minimize the gear rattle & whine, no dice.

I want to BUMP this thread and get updates on diff oils and trans fluids.

Searched 4-cyl Forum by topic and lots of stuff on oil but limited info on M/T and diff fluids.

I am about to do the trans and diffs on my 2015 w/@33K on them and am thinking about doing synthetics.

Is Mobil1 the way to go still?

I don't have my owners manual in front of me but can the diffs and trans use the same grade/visco?

 

I recently discovered that a 15/16 is the same as a 24 mm. My rear fill plug was rounded off and a buddy of mine whipped out a 15/16 and got it out in about a minute where a 24 mm wouldn't. Once you get into the larger sized metrics standards start working more often. A 10mm is just a 3/8". They both work. 9/16" and 14 mm are very close as well if I remember correctly. Since I got this Taco 3+ years ago I don't wrench on my DD regularly anymore so I'm starting to forget what I once knew.
