'14 Etune w/ Nav, no JBL

I have the O/R package and got the Etune w/nav and the stock speakers aren't very nice... I didn't want the sport because I wanted the rear locker.

I do want better sound but I want to keep the stock head unit...

Would it be worth it to swap out my stock speakers with JBLs? Would doing this require an AMP? What do the JBL set ups have besides the JBL speakers?

If I would need an amp would getting even better speakers than the JBLs be worth it?

I don't want to swap my head unit. I like the setup and have just gotten used to the controls/menus and it's been pretty simple to learn so far plus I like the stock look.

Any help would be great. I'm not trying to go all out crazy with 3m thinsulate sound deadening and all that. I just want some crisper sounding speakers with a little more base.

I had an 05 non-JBL and was disappointed in stereo because you cannot hear the music at speed with the windows down. I just ordered a 2014 with the JBL because there is a big difference, and like you; I wanted it factory.

There is an amp attached to the sub box. You can see it on boxes posted in the classifieds. I'm guessing the head unit might put out more power as well so you might have to swap that.

 

I'm in the same camp. Just bought a '14 and the factor head unit is nice. My thought was to spend a few bucks on new front speakers and a sub/amp combo. Rear's are fine and nobody ever rides back there. Looking for some ideas before I hit some custom shops in my area. I'm not one for 'big box' installers that learn as they go...

 

Yeah, I think I'm just going to get some better door speakers in the front and rears along with some nice tweeters. I'll get an amp and an audio control box. I've done lots of mechanical work on cars and stuff before but wiring etc is very new to me... I hope I don't get electrocuted or blow something up.

Any progress on the amp and speakers? I'm in the same boat, 2014 DCSB O/R with Nav/no JBL. The head unit is ok, but the volume/sound quality is poor compared to the 2011 Sport with the JBL. I've looked around a little, Crutchfield hasn't updated their catalog for the 2014's yet, but I would hope that the 2013 stuff would be the same.

 

I have a 2014 DC with JBL. The JBL package consists of more speakers, amp, and sub.
Can remember exactly what other speakers it adds to the cab off the top of my head though. It sounds incredible. Better than aftermarket systems I have had previously.

I don't think you can just put in the JBL speakers into a non-JBL truck. You would need the amp, different molding behind the rear seats, etc.
Your best bet would be to upgrade the factory speakers with aftermarket and/or install an amp and sub box behind the rear seats.

But I'm not an expert....just some guy that loves his Tacoma.

 

I changed the factory speakers in my JBL equipped 2013 DC and it did not sound so good. I really wanted to keep the head unit and sub, but when I upgraded the door speakers the balance sounded bad. Here is what I mean - the new speakers had much better sensativity and sounded very clear and louder. Unfortunately the sub did not get louder, so the base was really lower. I decided to add an amp and new subs, but I ruined the amp on the subwoofer (as it turns out the head unit does NOT work without that amp) so I scrapped it and installed a totally new system. im looking at doing the same thing i have been going around to the local sound shops to see what they all recommend, looking at different brands and products. This is what im thinking i will go with I already have hertz hsk165 6.5 components in the front doors, hertz hcx 690 6x9 coax in the rear doors, for intergration to the stock head unit im gunna go with audio control DQ-61, amp for door speakers either a rockford fosgate T800-4ad or T600-4, for the sub amp a rockford fosgate T1500-1bdCP, and for the sub wofer im not sure if im going to go with jl 13tw5v2 or 2 10" alpine type r shallow mount

 

what did u end up going with.

im in same place as you guys. entune premium without JBL, and it sounds good at low speeds, but on freeway, sound just too muddy. ideas?

 

I agree with you completely. Have a 2014 DCSB off-road with Entune/Nav, but no JBL. Sounds okay at low speeds in town, but is pretty awful on the Interstate.

Like you guys, I want to keep the stock head unit. I'm thinking we would want something like a JBL CleanSweep, a good amp, and of course better quality speakers. Would just those 3 upgrades be enough or is a subwoofer a must?

I'm going to go with my original post had a few thing pop up and take my extra money but I should be buying the dq61 next week and get the front doors hooked up then I will buy the sub box but insted if buying stereo gear I bought a kimber 1911 which took about half of my stereo budget so one re building it now. I will update with later with picture when I do it.

 

A sub is not a must all depends on what you get for door speakers. As far as the JL audio clean sweep they make a good product but from the research I have done you have to leave your stereo at 3/4 volume and use a seprate volume know to control your stereo, I personally don't like that Idea which is one reason im going to us an audio control DQ-61 ( http://www.audiocontrol.com/t34/17612/763279/OEM-Integration/DQ--61.html )for a processer which will turn on your amp automatically so you don't need a toggle switch which I have read people have had to do with the clean sweep. Audio controle is also a local company that takes care of its customers if something defects which I also like. Another positive is that all adjustments are manual with means you don't need a computer and the it doesn't automatically make the sound the way it want you make the sound WHAT YOU LIKE sure May take more time to set up but in the end u will have a better product that you can tune to your music style and hearing. Back to subs it's all up to your personal preference wether or not you want or like the spend extra money on good component speakers that cover most frequencies or get some subs amp and box but have to find good shallow mount subs. And quality amp is a must if u buy quality speakers to get quality sound you need a quality amp. Sorry for the long post hope this helps

 

Well I bought my dq61 today and a Rockford t600-4ab amp today just waiting for the dq-61 to show up so I can start my install

 

How much are you guys planning on dropping on doing these sorts of upgrades?

I like to consider myself a DIYer but wiring, amps, highs, mids, lows, bass, bla bla bla, that all doesn't make much sense to me. I just want to keep my head unit and have better clearer sound. I think I might even try to just take apart the cab and sound deaden/proof and see if that helps.

If not, then I'll just pay to have it done. I just don't trust people to do a good job and not cut corners...

 

Just got a '14 (my first Tacoma) a couple of weeks ago, and have the Entune without JBL. Found a really good audio guy locally, and here's what he hooked me up with:

JL XD 700.5 AMP
JL C5-650 Component (up front)
JL C2-650X (rear)
JL CP-108 (Sub)

Sub drops in behind drivers side rear seat.

Out the door, installed for $1500. There were too many choices, and for me this set up sounds really nice.

What kind of budget do you have to work with? Assuming you had guidance on exactly how to do the installation and could save the install money and DIY...?

 

I'm in the Long Beach area. As I said, it sounds great to me.

I wasn't there for the install, so pics aren't available. It looks completely stock from the outside, which is what I wanted.

 

Ill probably be it to mine 2000- 2500 but I all ready have sub amp and door components just have to get some new subs and get a box
