1995-2000 vs 2001-2004

Hello,

I was just wondering what is different between the 1995-2000 vs 2001-2004. If they were both a v6, Extra cab with a TRD Off Road package.

Besides the cosmetic stuff.

 

95.5-97 didn't have the trd package and they came with shorter rear leaf springs. BUT I think they were the only years to offer manual hubs... I think...

 

My 99 has manual hubs. But i dont know if 2001 and up do.

Doesn't the 98-00 have a frame extension on the front? I know you have to cut something of for elite bumpers but only 98-00 if i remember right.

 

Really, they're basically the same.
95.5-97 didn't have a TRD package, however the e-locker was an option.
Manual hubs were available 95.5-00.
Most TRD package trucks are "top of the line" and will have the more convenient ADD system though.

01+ saw changes in emissions and the wiring of the vehicle is significantly changed.
Late 03/ early 04 saw the introduction of the drive by wire throttle body. Not a huge deal.
That's really about it.

 

The way I look at it, the 1st gen trucks had 3 distinct 'sub-gens'.
The following are major differences (which are generalities since there are some exceptions ) :
- 95.5 - 97
grill is more hilux-style
only 2.7's had distributors
- 98 - 00
longer rear main leaves
new grill style
2.7 distributors replaced by coil packs
- 01 - 04
manual hubs no longer available
new grill style (more SUV-like IMHO)
coil packs replaced by COP's
double cabs models now available

 

Fully drive by wire? My 03 (not sure of MFG date) has a throttle cable to the throttle body, but a electronic throttle body.

Just a few more questions.

-Do any years have ABS? or was the an add on?
-All the 1st generations have air bags?
-What's the benefit of having manual hubs? They are just for the 4wd to make them free spinning like a RWD?

 

95-04 have ABS as an option.

Yes. 95-97 didn't have a passenger airbag though. They were standard 98+.

Benefit of manual hubs? The cv's don't spin all the time. 4wd system is a lot more simple, you don't have electronic stuff that can crap out and cause the 4wd not to engage. Even with ADD, just cause the CV's spin, there isn't power gong to the front end. Your truck is RWD until you shift into 4wd.

 

My 95 Tacoma has coil packs.

He was partially correct, 95.5-97 2.4/2.7 had a distributor.

 

Yes, I have a 2.7, so I stand corrected (as well as my original post).

 

would like to change my 04 with auto locking hubs to manual hubs is it a simple fix as in older chevys just buy manual hubs and change
