While the day was great and I enjoyed it immensely I could not wait to get back into my Taco!!! O. M. G. Those damn tracks make so much noise and vibration I thought it would never end.

September? Hopefully its the later half of the month - most of the crowds start to dwindle down by then. The weather can be a little iffy but September/October are great times to visit.
If you have any specific questions/concerns ask away! And I'll expect a full report on your trip afterwards too!

Just a quick recap on my trip yesterday...
Great weather, couldn't have asked for a better day. I even got a little bit of a sunburn on me nose!
We got an early start and headed in from West Yellowstone. The snowcoaches have to go slower than normal traffic because of the track system so getting around seemed to take forever! Plus there were a couple of city folks on the trip who had never seen wild animals before so we had to stop for every single buffalo
We did see a lot of wildlife. Winter is a great time to see the animals because they tend to hang out on the roads more - the roads are groomed /hardpack snow so its easier for them to walk around and they use less energy. Food is scarce this time of year and the grazers like the buffalo and elk have been living off of the body fat they stored up over the summer. At this point they are nearing starvation so conserving energy is very important to their survival.
And even the animals that don't hang out on the roads - like coyotes and eagles - are easier to spot even at a distance because they stand out against the harsh white of the snow.
In all we saw 4 bald eagles, 4 coyotes, about 2 dozen elk, lots of buffalo, some swans, ducks and geese. And I saw a cow moose on the way home last night so all in all it was a pretty good trip.

The snowcoach took us down to Old Faithful where everyone piled out of the coach and went to watch the geyser go off then they went back inside for lunch. I took off to walk around Geyser Hill behind Old Faithful instead of going to lunch. And it paid off...I was out on the hill and I had the place to myself. No one else had bothered to skip lunch to go explore. They missed out on quite a treat too. About 5 minutes after Old Faithful erupted Beehive Geyser erupted and I had a front row seat! I was about 20 yards away when it went off and unfortunately I had my telephoto lens on my camera so I couldn't get any pictures of it! Oh well, it was still an awesome sight. When I got back to the snowcoach some of the folks commented that they were looking for me at lunch and wondered where I had been - they had no idea what they had missed out on.

While the trip was great the ride was less than comfortable. It made my truck seem like a luxury vehicle. I'll never complain about the stiff ride of my truck or the vibes I had from my worn out Duratracs ever again! Imagine if you could take your truck with blown out shocks, air up the tires to the max PSI and then drive down a railroad track. Do that for eight hours and you'll get an idea of what it feels like to be in a snowcoach. They are testing out using fat tires on some of the rigs - sort of like you see on the "arctic" Hiluxes and such. If I ever do a snowcoach trip again it will be on one of those rigs

Pics will be coming soon...working on them now. :typing:

Winter is a different experience for sure. If you're camping Mammoth is the only option and Mammoth and West Yellowstone are the only two entrances open - you have to take either a snowcoach like I did or go on a snowmobile with a guided tour group.
If you want the real winter experience then January is probably the best time to visit because the weather is the harshest then.

A few of my "quickies" from live yesterday...
Upper Geyser Basin & Heart Spring
    [IMG]
Beehive Geyser eruption (that smaller puff of steam in the background is Old Faithful)
And the visitor center at Old Faithful... the snow is so deep they had to barricade the doors. Where it slid off of the roof was over 10' deep in places!

And a couple of the animals we saw...I have no idea why the bison lick their noses but it makes for a candid shot
And one of the elk that were enjoying a little nap in the sun

    Awesome!

Why can't we have that stuff out this way? I guess Niagara Falls is pretty cool, but just no comparison!

Too many peoples and cities out your way!

Yeah, yeah, yeah....this time change is kicking my butt this year. Couldn't focus yesterday so I didn't get through too many photos.

The inn is pretty awesome - the lobby alone just leaves you like
