I am looking at a 2005 SR5 4x4 with around 105k miles. Is there anything I should watch out for on this year? I've owned 2 new Tacomas before, a '10 and '13, so I know the basics, but I'm wondering about the '05 since it was the first year 2nd gen. So, growing pains for the Tacoma, rust, etc.
    Any insight is appreciated.

From my personal experience id check. Wheel bearings and the drive shaft u-joints. I have 150,000 miles on mine and that's really the only issues I've had.

^^x2. Make sure motor mounts aren't cracked/collapsed. check for rust on frame. If it has LSD rearend, ask about maintenance. check u-joints too

Was rust a big problem on the '05?

Yes, Toyota has already replaced some frames on the older models.

Check the motor mounts and expect it to have a weak tailgate. If it's on the original suspension, you know the springs will be shot. Other than that, the normal wear and tear, wheel bearings, u-joints, carrier bearing, seals (check for signs of leaks).

I'm aware of the rusty frames issue on 1st gens, but didn't realize '05s had an issue as well. What about something like 2008? Still an issue?

Honestly, it's not one specific year that's worse than the others, until at least the frame part number changed, which I recall was in 2009 (don't quote me on that).

Just take a good hard look at the frame before you even look at anything else on the truck.

x2, not year specific, 2nd Gen frames are just prone to the same rust BS that the first gens went through. They're just finally getting old enough and getting enough wear to where they're having issues. If it was maintained (washed), then you should be fine. The 2008 should be better but depends on where it was kept.
