Fortunately the engineers over at toyota are smarter than either of us are so I am sure that if they did infact bake more travel into the setup they wouldn't make it hazardous.

We are not talking about monopoly money here, and we live in the worst part of the country to be into wheeling. So If you want to shell out the extra $1500 for me to get new coilovers then by all means I'll give you an address to ship it to.

With the upgrades I am doing to my suspension I am at $1,404 delivered. UCA, Leaf Springs, Spring Seats, All pro flip kit, and timbrens. So to double the total cost with some coils to get more travel makes no sense. Sure a set of Icons would be better, but I don't need it right now. The goal down the road is to get the Total Chaos +2 kit, but that is not what I want right now.

I don't honestly care if I do get more travel. I haven't had a problem with my current set up, so If I don't get anymore I will not notice. I will wheel it same with or without extra wheel travel.

The reason I for my statement about the front travel is because of what I have read from a couple of Baja reviews online and in a video I watched that stated the following.

 

I believe you are taking my comments as malicious, or as "bashing" the Baja model of the Tacoma, or your truck in particular. My comments were not meant that way at all, and some benefit of the doubt would be nice. We don't have many wheelers in this area so I certainly don't want to alienate anyone over a simple discussion.

I know coilovers are expensive, I for one understand the toll this sport takes on the wallet. I really like your truck and think it looks great, I was just inquiring about some of your comments on the Baja suspension, which I know little about, other than minor minor changes from the TRD suspension.

I was primarily asking because of your comments on gaining more travel when changing UCAs, but using the same shock. Unless the balljoint was the limiting factor not the shock, you wouldn't see a change in travel numbers.

I am always looking for more data and to continue learning, and thought maybe there was something you knew that I did not, or had not seen yet.

And the point about Toyota engineers, you are really backing up my statements about the travel numbers. I was trying to be blatantly obvious that your previous statement about having more travel to gain was incorrect. IF that statement were true, the upper balljoint would have to be the limiting fact on droop, which would produce a hazardous condition, one you even admit they would not do.

The statement they made means the suspension design is limited by the stock upper. They wouldn't put a longer shock in there and bottom out the bj in the upper, we agree on that. What they mean is the travel was maximized around the stock upper arm. They squeezed out all the travel they could (which is more than previous tacos non-Baja) but had to still limit shock length bc of the ball joint. So they made a shock custom length, which when fully extended still protects the bj from binding, keeping the suspension in a safe working "zone". Yet yielding 9.25" of travel instead of 8.5". The Baja definitely has an improved suspension over stock, that is not in question. And I agree with you as well, that's a lot of money for coilover to gain less than an inch more of travel...save that money for the LT if you ever want to go that direction.

I simply didn't want you to continue to think you were going to gain even more travel using those TC arms, as you said you were going to.

As for them being smarter than you or I, well, you can only speak for yourself. I have met many of the engineers, while I was at the R&D center in MI, especially those working on the Tacoma, and I respectfully beg to differ on that point. I don't know what line of work you're in, but as a mechanical engineer myself speaking engineering with them, I wasn't impressed.

The TC 2+ kit would be an amazing upgrade, and I would recommend it long before any other 2+ kit out there. I have hard first hand data/evidence to prove that recommendation as well. Your truck with a 2" kit would be one radical ride, I know mine was, and I know I wish I had gone TC instead of AP, and probably would never have SAS'd the truck.

Until I put the UCA and run the truck I have no idea. Honestly I will be loosing down travel as is with the new spring seat. I know you know your stuff and I am sure you are right about the travel. I guess the UCA doesn't affect the travel. After I wrote the smarter part I was like....This might not be true. Toyota's goal is to make money. Clearly they have done some stupid shit in the past. lol

It's just razzes me when people make a suggestion to add something that is $XXXX more. Or when someone rains on your parade just before the install. I fully expect to gain 0 travel, but thought maybe the article was right. I have had a few people in the last week just push my buttons about it lately (not Tacoma World People) so now I am on edge about it.

I knew you weren't being malicious I am just been a little annoyed lately and wrote slightly more aggressively than I normally would. It's all good.

Leaf springs should be here Friday or Monday so everything is here. I needed some taller jackstands and wanted a second jack so I got them from harbor freight. From what I understand these are actually not bad so I rolled the dice!

I just got two sets of 6 ton jack stands from harbor freight, a second jack, and a cheap creeper to hopefully make it easier when I do the install.

 

I picked up the same jack (Pittsburgh brand IIRC) and it hasn't let me down yet.

Cool that what I was hoping. The reviews online were promising. You are correct the jack and jack stands are both Pittsburg.

I am not sure how long it would take to do it all. I know UCA and Spring seats would probably only take a couple hours. I wonder how long the leafs would take?

 

When I messaged Mark for his help to install leafs, extended brake lines, superbumps and flip kit, he quoted me 4-5 hours. Can't wait; 2.5 weeks

 

I know its here somewhere and I think you already told me but what leafs did you go with again, Expo pack?

And yes, I am stealing everything your build and putting it on mine

Leafs are easy and quick, I did my flip kit, leafs and rear brake lines by myself in 2-3 hours tops.

 

Yeah that's about what I figured, then toss in the bumps as well. I would rather error on the side of longer when I tell someone coming over, just in case you run into something.

 

Fuck those rivets!!! It is like 1 hour or less of work, and 2+ beating the shit out of the rivets!!!!

Awesome! I will do the brake lines a different day. I believe bleeding the brakes is easy, but time consuming.

Yeah even if it only takes 3 hours you have to leave yourself room when it is for someone else. When I do graphic design work for people I leave a couple extra hours baked in. I would rather charge them less at the end then have to charge more at the end.
