If you want better fuel economy either ride stock or drive a prius. Tacos get pretty good MPG for the truck that it is. i say lift it, have fun with it and take pride in it :) and have a second car as a commuter

Built for maximum low end torque, tooter II.VII intake manifold spacer, LCE long tube header, Injen long tube intake, 2,900 rpm torque peak.

Since mine is a street driven work truck, lifting would only hurt bed access. But I do totally get taking pride in your truck. Mine is modded for more low end torque and pulls like a tractor.

If someone could hack the cruise control and get it to set the throttle at a constant setting
Instead of the cruise trying to keep the speed constant that would help you get better mpgs. It would be like the mpg driving technique "driving with load".

I had that very problem with my 95 tacoma, where I couldn't keep the gas pedal steady. It felt like I had to lift my toe too high, which caused a sore muscle next to my shin on long drives. The problem is due to the fact that I have the "Food Stamp Edition" Tacoma w/ a steering column that has no height/depth adjustment, so I just had to put my seat closer to be the right distance from the steering wheel, sacrificing a good leg angle at the pedals.

Well, after 3 years, I couldn't stand it anymore and tried what ended up being the simplest solution in the world: an extra spring. Seriously, that's it. An extension spring (maybe 3/8" by 5") with a fairly long range of motion and a fairly light resistance zip tied between the gas pedal shaft and the parking brake mount, preloaded to about 1/3 of the spring's range of motion. It can be slid closer or farther from the gas pedal pivot to change the force at the pedal. It takes a nice feeling force to reach full throttle and is at equilibrium when cruising at 45mph in 4th gear. On flats, my throttle doesn't budge for miles. Having bigger pedals makes a big difference too. If you have big feet or always wear boots and can't feel the pedal, you'll love this. As an added bonus, I'm less likely to get a speeding ticket for a heavy, lazy foot.

My thoughts on mods to the intake:

I suspect the theory holds water, that intake mods on an EFI vehicle won't make an appreciable difference in mpg at cruising speeds and throttle positions, within context. However, a part of my commute involves a 1500 ft climb in 7 miles with a 2.5 mile flat in the middle at about 60mph the whole way. This involves 75-100% throttle in 5th gear at some point, or ~60% in 4th at a higher rpm. Lacking the power to hold 5th gear and keep the RPMs low makes a huge difference in MPG when I downshift to 4th at 3200rpm to keep up with traffic. Whether I shift or not is usually teetering on air temp and barometric pressure. A proper air filter would almost certainly save me some $$ going over that hill, if it just kept me from downshifting or using full throttle in 5th.

To preserve good filtration but free up the high end, I'm considering ditching the stock air boxes and making an enclosure on the passenger side of the engine compartment to house 1 or 2 cone type Amsoil Ea air filters. That entire side is empty anyway. I'm thinking of sealing all the holes in the fender, building a heat shielded wall on the engine side, a simple lid to that, and using a material like a synthetic swamp cooler mat to prefilter most of the mist and large particles from the incoming side near the headlight. I'm avoiding most prefab aftermarket products to save $$. Thoughts on design?

Na, your not really freeing up the high end, it's breathing fine, 1-2 HP at most above 5000.

I own a 2013 4WD Double cab. It now has about 6k miles. I dont know if there is a problem, but mpg is not even half of what toyota claims. Most recent I got 573 miles to 66 gallons of gas. Any advice.

Global Warming has resulted in the coldest Winter in NJ in decades if not the coldest in history. The cold seems to result in poor gas mileage compared to more moderate temps. Do y'all notice this ? Wonder Y

I for one am sick of shoveling huge drifts of global warming off of the porch. 2-4" a day minimum really sucks! We got over a foot last night, and our peak wind gust was 59 mph... HUGE piles of snow everywhere.

I did this for better cab heat and it works well for that. Plus it seems to warm up quicker but I suppose that could be blamed on the old t-stat. Coolant has never risen over 194F since I put it in. Usually it's 180-185 thanks to this year's bitter cold.

Yes, all engines suffer from loss of efficiency under cold conditions.

I have a warm intake too. It was 12 deg. outside and the IAT sensor was reading 24 deg. with the cold front on.

Autoanything.com says they don't have the AFE filters for 2014's. Can I use 2013 or is my filter tray the wrong size?

I'd like to add: Ride to reach the next light green. Continuing in motion through traffic lights raises my mileage by one mpg. Turning engine off at lights I Know take a long time to change has added another mpg.
