Driveline vibration on acceleration?- 09 TRD stock

Hi all, just wanted to run this by you guys to make sure it's normal (or not).

When I accelerate from a stop all out (wot), through first gear there seems to be a slight vibration. If I had to guess, I'd say it sounds (and feels) like the driveshaft shuddering. I've seen a video posted and it seems like that. It's not too noticeable and only happens wot. It also seems to happen more when the back end squats more (ie, going up a hill) vs not. Once it shifts out of first it's fine.

Is this normal? It's a brand new stock TRD sport access cab 4x4. Love the truck btw.

From a standstill to WOT??

That's a pretty extreme situation to put the driveline through. I wouldn't be surprised that your pinion is pivoting pretty extremely under the torque load and it's going OUTSIDE the sweet spot of the U-joint which can result in vibrations. If you keep doing that - you're gonna start blowing out u-joints.


Have you taken it to the dealer?

 

He has an automatic so it's not like he's dropping the clutch, hell I do greenlight - WOT almost every light myself

From what I've gathered reading on it and my own truck, usually it seems to be more speed based than rpm based. I can say I've never noticed it at WOT on my truck though, but I have the AAL TSB and off-road suspension. Also I got rid of a ton of vibration by tossing the stock bfg rugged trails, not sure how the dunflops hold up or work into that on the sports...

 

There's still gonna be a great amount of torque at WOT regardless of transmission.

The question here is - when he says WOT, what exactly does he mean?

If he starts off normally (not WOT), does he still get the vibrations?

If not, then I'd say....drive the truck normally to prevent the vibrations. These trucks aren't meant to start off WOT everytime. If you do that all the time, something will break and you'll wanna upgrade to parts that can handle the torque load if you plan on continuing to drive like that.

 

So, out of curiosity what exactly is going to break? People don't need to swap out driveshafts after dropping in a TRD SuperCharger or other things... they're built to handle the power. also, I'd be willing to venture towing 6500lbs is a lot harder on the drivetrain than spinning tires.... Also i've tested trying to 'launch' using the auto transmission @ 2500rpm.... it waited to shift into first until it dropped to about 1500 revs... so I really don't see the issue :shrug:

But anyway that's going off-topic... I am curious if his vibrations seem RPM based or speed based as well.

 

The drivetrain can handle it. I have the trd blower and have no problems doing wot. They wouldnt warranty it if it couldnt.

Mine started doing this from 0-15 mph the day I had the spring TSB done. Dealer said it was due to the stiffness of the new springs that more road and drivetrain vibrations where felt. I say BS!!

 

If you're launching the truck ALL THE TIME - stuff ain't gonna last.

U-joints can break

 

i'm not performing any launching technique (i agree, not the best thing for the truck) and i don't drive around smoking the tires. this happens not only at wot, but a solid 3/4 throttle.

if it's the driveshaft angle when the back end squats (which i did some more research, it likely is) i don't have much of a problem with it (it doesn't happen too much and isn't too noticeable).

 

My '09 has the first gear shudder on every acceleration, and I pretty much baby it for the most part. Naturally, the dealer claims not to be able to duplicate this issue... nor the hard shift from 1st to 2nd... nor the transmission "clunk" when starting and stopping...

Ridiculous for a brand new $30k truck. I'm learning to live with it, but my opinion of Toyota quality is going downhill fast.

My 09 has done that since I drove it off the lot. Never had any other truck in 20 years that did that.

 

Then you're not truely doing WOT.....

Anytime I see someone say WOT - I'm thinking, balls to the wall, foot to the floor..... Totally different than 3/4 throttle.

I've recently developed a minor vibrations at take-off. I just noticed it the other day. I know it hasn't been doing that for the last 2 or so years I've owned it. Not sure what it could be and not even sure I've felt it since.
But with my warrantee coming up in March, I'll be certain to do some investigating soon.

 

I dropped my truck off today at a local off-road shop for this vibe/shudder issue. We'll see what they find.
