Last engineer neglected to tell me that one of the suction lines on our bilge pump was completely rotted off..

Got caught in 25 foot seas yesterday as we were leaving Dutch Harbor.. Did an engine room check, only to find water gushing up from the floorboards. Check valve in bilge overboard had failed; and was flooding the boat through the busted off suction line..

Some radiator hose/clamps and a few choice curse words came up with a temporary fix - it'll get us to Kodiak, at least.

    I was not happy.

Will you be seeing "last engineer" again? He deserves a special thanks.

Glad you found it in a timely manner and were able to apply a temp fix. That sounds like the kind of thing that could sneak up on you and get ugly?

Yep, Civil Service; 10% from 10PM to 6AM (8 hrs of my 9 hr shifts). I work one Sat night/Sun morning shift every two week pay period; get paid an additional 25% (on top 10%) for that whole 9 hr shift.

Yeah, it could have been really bad..

For whatever reason, that's the only remaining mild steel piping, everything else is stainless. Looks like I'll have some stainless welding to do in the near future..

Should be in Kodiak with a trip of fish on by Friday; just cruising by Sand Point. Should've gotten some sleep, had a long day working on the gear - now I've got a wheel watch in a few minutes..

Heading to the engine room to transfer some fuel, do a walkaround on all of the machinery.. Bearing temps, etc..

Have a good rest of the (night?), all..

That was my guess, "really bad," just didn't want to say it ... my limited boat knowledge/experience says it's best to keep the water on the other side of the hull; particularly out of the engine room. ;) Again glad you discovered early and we able to apply a temp fix.

How long is your wheel watch? Hope you get time for a nap after.

    Stay safe Jake.

10% is not bad.. I get about 3.5% an hour for my whole 12hr shift. My wife is a registered nurse and she gets about 7.5%/hr

It makes a difference. The 25% I mentioned is "Sunday premium," I guess that's obvious though.

    Swing shift (2PM to 11PM) gets 7.5%.

No Sunday premiums here, but I do get paid for a full shift for 11 holidays regardless of if I work them or not. I don't knows who's idea that was, but i'm not gonna argue.
