2016 Toyota Tundra to Come With Cummins Diesel

Sadly CAT engines aren't coming back, they left in 09/10 after all the lawsuits on their engines being junk after they spent millions and millions trying to get their engines compliant with the BS emissions here...ended up just cutting their losses...which really sucks cuz I love CAT.. Like someone already mentioned, now they have their "own" trucks with a POS Navistar engine in them

btw I'm not a fan of the modern cummins anymore..the older cummins ram's were badass..and older cummins big cam semi engines were beast

 

I wish Toyota would put their own motor in the truck. I had a 2005 5.9, it was a good engine, tranny, front end, and wheel bearings were shit. Ive been waiting for the diesel Tundra but am going to wait until the motor is proven and see if the switch it. I aint no ginnea pig.

 

I can't find a place to put my review. But wanted to add my .02 and most likely get flammed. I have the new V6 in my silverado and it is very good if you're gonna tow anything under 7000lbs. I am getting better than the EPA ratings in MPGs. worth a look if toyota doesnt update their drivetrain.

 

Today's V6 is more powerful than yesterday's V8. Most people just can't accept a V6 in a full size truck. But I can also see that a smaller engine doing more work doesn't get that much better MPGs though.

 

I agree, I don't tow and being rated at 7000 lbs it can pull its own weight, so its enough power for me.

 

Diesel, diesel, diesel. Cost more to buy, cost more to fuel up, have to add dog piss additives into a separate tank. No thanks.

I have had more diesel vehicles than gas vehicles iin my life, and based on that real world experience with both I will never pick gas over diesel. As soon as diesel is available as an option I will not even think twice. South Africa, Europe etc. have diesels available in almost any car or truck on the market, and have a large, sometimes majority share.

That being said, it is not for everyone; it kind of grows on you.

 

Even though it cost more, I was under the impression it lasts longer.

I don't know why it cost more when it's less refined than gasoline.

 

now that gasoline is direct injected, variable cams, especially chevys new pushrod motors, have LOTs of off idle torque and mpgs. so with diesel supposed to be getting better gas mileage, will it be able to work back that premium? so unless you are towing a lot, regularly, I don't know how many people would truly benefit.

I mostly notice the rest of the truck falls apart before the motor fails

 

I've noticed that GM only does pushrod V8's now. Their I4 and V6's are all DOHC now.

 

yeah off idle torque is the biggest difference i notice between my old GM LS1 and my DOHC coyote 5.0.

Ive had 6 pages of arguments on DOHC vs pushrod on corvette forum. I personally am in the pushrod camp even for a corvette.

 

I liked my LS1 more than my Northstar 4.6

 

yeah so you know. i moved to a 5.0 and never found the better mpgs that DOHC is supposed to offer. lots of smoke and mirrors and different definitions of efficiency.

In a passenger sedan though, i can see DOHC would work better.

I work in sales at a dealership, and there is a lot of discussion about a possible hybrid over the diesel.

 

Toyota should offer an Ecoboost-style engine (twin-turbo, DGI, etc) for those who want a little extra hauling power while maintaining decent gas mileage. GM has followed Ford's lead and I'm sure their take on the TT/GI V6 will be offered in their truck before long. I had a car with the 3.5L EcoBoost and WOW...that was one hell of an engine, 360HP/365TQ stock and it was putting out around 400HP/440TQ with a $500 ECU tune (some guys were over 600HP with bolt-ons and stock internals).

 

In my opinion, if they're going to end up developing their own diesel, they should also develop a diesel hybrid. Porsche was running tanks with hybrid diesel-electic gear in WWII. I think the concept would work great for trucks.

Some people like/need diesels for their extra towing capacity and long-life. No one said they were cheaper.

Calm down there, junior. Most Class 8 trucks are always in the shop. Sounds like you should've bought a glider kit. Even then, guess what? It will have issues regardless.

Imo, they should've gone with a I6 Cummins similar to what's in the Rams.
