God, I love this DeLorme GPS. Best unit I've ever worked with for a hand-held. The software is great, the unit has so many options. Here's a view of a super quick import I did of the back-way CK trail that I imported from HikeArizona.com. Quick overlay of the satellite imagery (that loads right into the handheld) and BOOM, ready for export to my device.

I'm down for two groups and us 2wd guys start later like maybe 10 or 10:30. Takes me a while to get there so it works for me.

Us 4x4 guys won't be able to commit to a time, but we can try. Too many variables. I'd love to hit Castle Hot Springs road off the Carefree Hwy at 9am and be up in CK by 2pm for a late lunch. I think 6 hours trail time should be our max.

Is there decent cell service out there? Maybe you guys could let us know when you leave and then we can time when we should leave. Maybe also let us know if anything changes and if you guys will be late or whatever.

Cell service is pretty decent but not reliable for the 4x4 crew because we will be down in some canyons on quite a few occasions. The 2X route has service pretty much the whole way, and I'm pretty sure there's a tower or 2 in CK.

I still think it seems like everyone is going to try for the backway considering no 2wders have chimed in

I don't think there's any way to really sync up a separate 4x4 and 2WD meet. If you're in this, you're going the 4x4 way. If you want to go to CK the front way, just make it an entirely different run. The timing of the two ways has far too many variables.

If you're going on this run, you're going the back way from Lake Pleasant. End of argument.

I mean I'm all for the backway, that's where we were going anyways. I just think that 6 hour time frame is gonna be stretched a lot longer with more trucks, plus, half of them being 2wd.

Regardless.. we are in and should be a fun and interesting trip.

Hahaha wouldn't be the first time. The first run I ever went on was with Seabass, and we ere having to pull guys up hills all day. Good thing for his winch. LOL

I have no problem with everyone going the back way, but ill probably be at the back since I want to actually play on the obstacles/bypasses and get some good video and pictures.

I just have a feeling by the time we get to said obstacles, we will be rushing to get everyone to the top and wont have time. I would love to actually take our time and enjoy the trail instead of just seeing how fast we can get through it.. kinda defeats the purpose of going the backway.

Points well made here. By doing this all in one group instead of trying to coordinate a meet in CK, we can take our time more. I'm all for getting some good pics and hitting the tougher stuff this time. The 2WD guys will be in much better shape than they think - just using the skinny pedal a little bit more than the 4x4 guys. This trail is in good shape and is very doable with 2wd, it's just good to have the 4x4 assistance just in case.

So... based on being gone last weekend to Rug Road, and also having a kid at home who was close friends with both of those kids who died in that murder/suicide last Friday, it's probably best that I'm not able to go on this trip. We already had an overnight camping birthday party for a friend scheduled on the 29th, so being gone 2 weekends in a row is unlikely to happen.

I'll keep trying to get things settled at home, and if it's remotely feasible then I'll join this run. I love CK and look for reasons to go up there, and I LOVE to camp so this is going to be a bummer if I can't make it.

agreed! 2wd can make it somewhat easy. just use the skinny pedal mod.

    ADAM YOU HAVE TO GO!!!

In the bold was my exact thinking.
i really want to play on the hard bypasses and get the max capabilities of my truck.
but i was thinking... wouldnt we want to be in the front? so we can hit the hard obsticals while the 2wders are getting up the other ways? or am i looking at it wrong? haha

Trust me, I really want to go. Just got some home obligations, and family comes first.

We will need to put a 4x4 in front of each 2wd, because if all the 2wd guys get hung in the same spot, there are very few places where it's wider than 1 truck width to get recoveries done. And we need a CB in the front and a CB in the rear to keep the front from going too far ahead if someone gets into trouble.
