Why should you lubricate your universal joints on the driveshaft?

THIS is why!!



Customer came in and said he had a vibration over the past 2 weeks. Then driving down the highway he thought the transmission quit because it stopped pulling.

 

Whats is Heaven and Earth type mechanical noises and vehicle jumping for 1000?

Same thing happened to me about a month ago!

 

Did your universal joints not get lubricated? Or was it just failure of a part?

 

Were those greaseable u-joints?

 

I guess its too bad for those of us who don't have any zerk fittings...

 

They just never got greased, I had never really known that they were supposed to be greased or replaced. And one night I was goin down the road and it broke out.

 

I grease mine every 3weeks or after every prospecting run, its funny most of my friends that laugh at me for doing so end up replacing their Uni's where-as I haven't yet..ROFL

how often should one do this and how do you do it?

 

Ok, so what options do those of have whose Tacomas have no zerk fittings, aside from buying news ones?

 

If you have prerunner and don't have zerks in u-joints:

1. Wait for around 80 000 miles and replace u-joints with new ones that have zerks

2. Tap existing u-joints and install zerks.

 

I do it every oil change. Since I'm already under the truck and its easy enough to get them all while the oil is draining

 

i just spit on mine.

 

its ok to do them every second or third oil change (15000 miles), especially when truck is fairly new.
Also its good to grease them before off-road trips especially ones that involve water or snow.

 

This goes back to the old days in a sense. Remember how they call them LOFs? for Lube, Oil, and Filter. Lubricate all greasable joints, replace oil filter, replace engine oil. All grease fittings should be lubricated every oil change. Been a time-honored tradition since way back when.

 

Does this apply to 2012? Can I use this stuff?



I keep my gun loaded with it for my boat trailer bearings...
