It sounds pretty cool but i don't mind carrying around a couple gallons of water around while camping or out to the beach, but I do wish i had that outlet some of you guys have.

I actually really like this idea, add some baffles to the inside to keep it from sloshing and i think you are on to something. I travel alot around desert roads and always bring water, this would just be a nice way to save some room.

Baffles wouldnt really be needed for weight shift, not sure if the sound would be bad though. 1 drop of bleach from an eye dropper would keep nasties away, ...per 5 gallons if i recall.

I took some pics and measurements. Looks like you could get 5' of 6" pipe in there pretty easily. That's be 7.3 gal. You could probably fit another smaller diameter 5' pipe above, or smaller sections of 6" pipe below for additional capacity.

you could use the quick open type valves too , just turn handle 90 degrees, looks like a great idea, I'd stash the valve in the enclosed box with a loop or 2 of hosing.

Okay, I bought a 10' section of 3" pipe and am going to mess around to see what configuration works best and how much I can fit. I went with 3" because the pipe and fittings are much cheaper than 4", and after more measuring and eye-balling, it doesn't look like 6" pipe will work.

I also though about other ways of storage like sticking water cans and collapsible water containers, but I think PVC will hold up best to pressurization.

I was looking into this. I can get four end caps and 10ft of 4" pipe for $25. Adding a valve stem for pressurizing would be easy and cheap (one hole & valve stem should set & seal itself). Getting the water in & out is where this becomes expensive. I don't like reducing down to a 1.5" or 2" to get a valve on there, because it reduces capacity. And I don't like the cheap igloo cooler style valves (A drill and screw & tighten operation) because I don't think they would hold the pressure and I think they'd be easy to break.

After all my deciding factor on building two of these is cost, if it's cheaper to go buy jugs, I'll go buy the jugs.

If anyone figures out a good way to get water in and out that is cost effective post it up!

10' of 4" pipe was only $12 at Home Depot by my house, but the end caps were about $10 each. 10' of 3" pipe was $9 and the fittings were all about half the cost of their 4" counterparts.

I cut the pipe and stuck a couple up in there to see how much room there would be. It looks like 2 - 5' sections of 3" pipe is going to be all that will fit in this configuration, mostly due to the contour of the bed sides. That provides less than 4 gal of storage. I'm going to have to figure out something else.

    Here's the pics:

I have a first gen. I was doing it more for a project out of boredom, plus they wont have to be secured as much. I try and get as much capacity as possible for buying one chunk of pipe.

You can make yourself a pretty nice sized fiberglass tub to match the contours in there and maximize the use of the space. I have done some fiberglass work before and i think you could easily do this yourself, just pull off the bedside and make a mold so that it will tuck in there real nice.
