I'd say the carb needs some work before anything else.

After it starts i don't have many issues. Once it was running it would usually start up after one kick, it had sort of a dead spot in the throttle but I figured that was due to the top end being shot (piston was slightly cracked). Cold starts are a major bitch though.

I've got spark, fresh fuel, pipe is a little crusty so I might clean that up a little, silencer has brand new packing, I'm going to pull off the carb today again and give it a good once over and check the reeds as well, I'd think jetting would be ok I had Honda do it last time i brought it in a few months back, need to do a compression check still, cranks seals were in good shape.

Sounds like reeds to me - they'd cause a bog.

Or maybe bad sealing between the reed block/cylinder or reed block/carb - but then you'd hear pinging because you'd be running way too lean - that's probably not it. In any event - I'd take a look at that too. A way to check is to spray starter fluid on the interface while the bike is running. If your engine spikes in RPM, you know it isn't sealed well because it's sucking the fluid through the holes in the sealing surface.

Basically it's the reeds job to atomize the fuel in the air/fuel mixture... it's making an air fuel 'mist'. If they don't atomize, they will clump together and make drops - which will probably flood your engine and cause it to be hard to start. It's easier for the sparkplug to light a 'mist' of air/fuel than it is to light a droplet that may not be close enough to the spark to light in the first place... causing your engine to flood. Once it does start, it probably takes a few seconds to clear itself out, right?

Makes sense, I'll keep tinkering with it today and see if i have any luck. I plan on ordering new reeds anyways so hopefully thats the case.

    cool - hope it works!

When you look at the reeds, make sure the reeds and the 'V' portion of the reed block are sealing properly. That'd introduce a few other problems that I won't bother getting into.

The reed block valve system is pretty cool.

checked out the reeds and they seemed to be in good shape, no gaps or anything. But just browsing the internet this morning i found this on another forum...

"Gas on. choke on put bike in second gear and rock it back n forth neutral then kick it

one or two kicks is all mine have ever taken regardless of the year with this method.

A factory Honda mechanic clued me to this years ago"

Did it and fired up 3rd kick, I let it run for a few minutes then a bolt came lose..

Of course it was the most difficult bolt in the world to try and finagle your hand up behind the frame to get threaded but with a few attachments on my ratchet and my sister holding a wrench on the other side i got it tight for now until i rip the whole damn thing apart again to retorque everything. Took it around the block and it smoked like a sonovabitch but it ran so thats all im happy about lol.

    lol what bolt was it?

and i have no idea why that trick worked. Maybe it's an anti-theft mechanism...

My buddy was the same way till about 20 OT 9 when he had to get rid of his bikes and ended up with a 01 YZ250 a few months later. YZ had more bottom end on an all stock motor then his clapped out 02 CR250, which was built. Just saying you might want to start shopping around....

Idk if i'd be interested in buying a dirtbike from the same company that makes musical instruments :D

they have a brand new 13 YZ at the local dealership that looks pretty sweet that i've been kicking around.. but for what i do, and for how short the riding season is here the CR fits my needs well, its got plenty of grunt for the riding i do. And its never left me stranded on the side of a trail...except when it runs out of gas

Nope the reeds do not atomize the fuel, thats the carbs job along with the air rushing through it. The reeds only job is to work as a one way valve for the intake system, the V-force will let more air in by design. I replace my reed pedals every 80 hours, they tend to get brittle over time and can actually break.

It simply pulls some fuel into the cylinder to help ease starting.

True about the carb. But a broken reed can still have the same affect as I posted before.

I did a search yesterday and saw the same thing - makes sense. you're basically priming the engine like a weed-eater.
