Break in period?

I just bought my 6 lug, 2.7L Access cab and I cannot seem to find anything in the manual on a break in period? It just says bring it in for an oil chnage at 5,000. Should I chnage the break in oil sooner? any other recommendations on break in periods?

 

Regarding the first oil change: no short intervals needed. Just follow the maintenance schedule. The oil filters installed at the factory are very good and have more than enough capacity to catch the bits of shavings that might accumulate during the initial wear-in.
There really aren't any break-in recommendations since the engines are already test-run before being installed in the trucks. Here are a few general, everyday engine recommendations: Don't bang the rev limiter and don't lug the engine. Don't rev it above 3500rpm until it reaches normal operating temperature. Feel free to drive it gently after giving the oil 30 seconds to circulate after cold starts, assuming it's above 25* F. (Some people in warmer climates like yours idle their engines way too long before driving.) That's all I can think of, these engines are pretty robust and modern materials and manufacturing processes make them last a long time with basic maintenance. Enjoy.

 

What year? I just bought a 5 lugger 2.7 and there are specific break-in instructions in the owner's manual.

Here's what my 2010 owner's manual says:
For the 1st 200 miles avoid sudden stops.
For the 1st 500 miles do not tow a trailer.
For the 1st 1000 miles do not drive at extremely high speeds, avoid sudden acceleration, do not drive continuously in the low gears, do not drive slowly with the manual transmission in a high gear and do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods of time.
There is no need to change the oil before 5000 miles under normal driving conditions.

 

But be prepared for a dozen recommendations different than that.

 

I think mine said not over 55 for the first 100 miles but maybe that was a different vehicle. I say drive it like you stole.

1000 miles: Avoid sudden acceleration and high speeds. Avoid driving prolonged in the low gears. Don't lug (slow in high gear...manual trans)
Avoid constant speeds for prolonged periods.
