Installed LED dome lights & map lights

I did more reading on this and realize that you guys are right. The vehicle system thinks the bulb is burned out due to the resistance being so low...who could guess it would be too smart for its own good.

My post tho does explain why the dimmer doesn't work very well when you use LEDs in the dash. Using a rheostat to adjust the voltage works well for incandescent lights not so well for LEDs since they only work in a certain voltage range. The brightness of LEDs won't dim very smoothly with only a rheostat.

 

I think you meant resistance is high.

 

Hey jumper just spent a pretty penny on led's had I know about your service I would had picked them up from you. Wha size resistor would one need to make the dome and map light work and how would I attach it, if its possible? I am interested in the head light LED. I have an 01 Tacoma. Thank you so much

 

Does anyone have trouble with the LED dome light not being wide enough? Looks like it's near a 1/4" less in length.. 2nd gen tacoma 4door sr5 4x4

I'm pretty sure you got the wrong bulb (31mm), you need to get the longer one (42mm).

Great ideas, thanks! Option 2 worked for me! I registered this forum so I can share what I did.

Some measurements on 2004 Tacoma Double Cab.

.36 Amp with a 5W incandescent bulb at 12V. LED is drawing .24 Amps, so I'm adding .12 Amp to add up to at least .36 Amp, since I know for sure at .36 Amps, the dome light works! (All current measured with un-fused "20 A" terminal on multi-meter.)

To add .12 Amp, I need a 100 Ohm (R=V/I=12/.12) resistor, rated at 1.44W or higher (P=V*I=12*.12). Since I have not a higher powered resistor than .25W, so I added a few .25W resistors (quarter inch long in body length) in parallel. They need to be at least 576 Ohms each to avoid overheating ( R=V*V/P=12*12/.25). So I found a few resistors between 600 and 1200 Ohms in parallel, the net resistance is measured to be 115 Ohms.

Everything works! The resistors feel warm to the touch when the light is on. Otherwise, no voltage is measured across the resistors.

Ran a resistor across the back of an LED purchased from AutoZone. Now, "on" position works fine, "door" only works when key position to acc. With key out, door open has no light whatsoever on my 2003 dc Taco
