This building kills dozens of birds every day. They see the reflection of the big cottonwoods and can't differentiate it from the real woods. They think they are flying through a forest at top speed. Then BAM. Some live, some don't.

Irony: this is adjacent to a nature preserve. They thrive there, and are killed here. Stupid human tricks.

Yesterday, I saw the biggest victim yet, a wild turkey. I looked up and could even see where he had crashed through the branches as he fell. Feathers were caught all over the branches.

From 1978 - now one building in Chicago has claimed 31,705 birds from over 140 species.

One hundred million - one billion birds die each year due to window strikes.

Three best free ways to avoid them:
    1.
Move feeders close to your windows — 1.5 feet or closer. From this distance, birds won’t be able to build up enough momentum to hurt themselves if they do fly against the glass.
    2. Close curtain and blinds when possible to break up the illusion of clear passage or reflected habitat.

    3. Move houseplants away from windows. Birds may view them as refuges and try to perch on them.

Appreciate the data, But what do you do with mirrored windows on the fifth floor? One of the biologists I work with was trying to raise awareness about this and work with property management to see if something could be done. Coatings?

More irony: our company works on lots of environmental impact reports...

The Bed Bath and Beyond around the corner claims a lot of birds, I am not sure if that is glass or a marble I haven't been there in a while.

Prob highly reflective glass. Blame the goofball architects specifying it not us glass guys :D

The funny thing is most of the reflective glass that kills the birds is only ascetically pleasing. It does not perform well thus increases HVAC costs.

My company is the sole importer in NA of the best anti reflective glass in the world but no one wants to pay $75 per sqft for our stuff when they are used to paying $7 sqft for the normal crappy glass.

    Typical glass reflects around 10%
Our specialty glass is less than 0.5%

That's about all I can say without revealing my employer:spy:

My wife hit on last year with her truck, the bird was dead stuck to the grill and the grill was broken so we both lost.

The turkey? Yes. It was still there yesterday evening as I left, and it was gone this morning. I am sure the local coyote is passed out in the woods with greasy feathers all over his muzzle.

A red-shouldered hawk hit the biologist's window on the 6th floor a couple years ago. It dropped like a sack of crap 6 floors. He went out and gathered it up (he as a license) and put it in a box and brought it up to his office. It revived gradually, and then it was all like, dude, WTF, let me out of here. He released it and it flew off. Several roost in the oaks nearby.
