So Brown came by today and left a package.

Of course, I had to try out the auto focus on the long lens.
First I tried the Teleconvertor, and either the focus was off, or I wasn't holding it still enough for 1000mm (I didn't feel like dragging the tripod out). I deleted all of them.

This was one of the best at 500mm (EXIF shows 400, not sure why), and I let the auto-focus system do it's thing.
This one was ISO-800, f/10 at 1/400 (hand held)... and it was still a little hot, but cleaned up nicely in LR.

Was thinking about using a crop of this for the weekly competition, but though the shadows bring out the detail around the lower perimeter, they just aren't strong enough to be considered the "focus" of the shot.

    I recently shot the moon.

This is from 1456mm ( 400 2.8 x 1.4 Ext III x 2.0 Ext II x 1.3 crop APS-H sensor). On tripod with 10 second delay. IS on to combat mirror slap but at this range- everything made the thing shake. Im going to try and shoot with the mirror up but not sure where Live view is on the Mark IV (if it exists at all)

Taken on March 11th from the southern hemisphere

Didn't even think about using Live-View to eliminate mirror slap. LV is a good focusing aid too if your camera allows you to zoom in.

If the weather is clear Sunday morning, I'm planning to head out before sunrise to catch the full moon setting behind the LA skyline.

I plan to get out early enough to mess with the teleconvertor and see if I can tighten up the focus on the tripod.

    That is a beautiful shot.
Very sharp and the detail is great.

Thanks- Its amazing to see the moon boogie through the sky at that range- you focus on the far right and by the time it shoots- the moon is centered already. Ive played with Liveview in the past and it worked very well for night shots so I should try it again. Waiting on a full moon now.

    No mirror lockup?

Looks great! Doesn't look like stacked tele converters with how sharp it is!

So how do you get the transparent watermarks?
I'm using a light grey, which works, but I'd rather do something transparent.
I can create a graphic in Paint.net with a transparent background, but not the text or graphic.
The new(er) version of Gimp that I'm running seems to have lost transparency settings on text.

Should have a transparency or opacity setting. Maybe have to change it for the layer and not the text? Sorry I'm only familiar with photochop, and a little paintshop...

Rad shot! It almost looks like a painting. Do you have the out of the camera raw file? I'm curious about your post-processing.
