You're turning the camera off when you change lenses aren't you?

Check the switch on the lens. Be sure it's in AF.

Has the lens every auto focused? If it has, try cleaning the contacts on both the lens and body. Is the lens newer than the body? If it is, try upgrading the camera firmware. Do you have a filter on the lens? If so, try taking it off.

If this doesn't fix it, wrap it up and send it in for repair.

Just put my roommate's 18-55mm lens on my body and it auto focuses just fine. So it's a lens issue. I'll try to clean the contacts on the body. It auto focuses fine on my D3000, so I'll do some more trouble shooting.

    Thanks guys.

So, I'm in my first photography class. I'm using my first DSLR camera. I have a canon t3i. This was with the stock lens. I had taken some shots at night with the full moon this weekend. I went out with my son for a boy scout weekend trip. Northwest Colorado.

Thanks! I am starting to see lighting in a whole different way now. Wish I could see it more often but when I do it is very satisfying.

Matters of Light and Depth is a great book that talks about lighting from a cinematography perspective. Great 'crossover' book on lighting.

    Here ya go Marc...

A couple of shots showing more detail on the building.
The stone work is simply incredible. There are a number of different patterns in the centerpiece of each stone.

Nice Rich! Agreed that stone work is awesome. Are those zoom shots or crops? They look really clean either way!

    Very new building.
Looks like construction started in late 2011. Building was completed in late 2012, but it wasn't until a few months ago that all of the landscaping was done and they started using it.

We drive by it after breakfast on the way from Denny's to Walmart.

Those are all crops (including the competition entry.)
The raw file had the scaffolding at the bottom, so I cropped that out.

    The original file was
    f/5.6
    1/1000
140mm (max zoom on the 7100 kit lens)
    ISO-200

I really should have pulled out the 70-300 to get some tighter shots of the stone work, but honestly, I had no idea how much detail there was until I got home and started cropping the shots for the competition.

That reminds me... unless the new challenge involves shadows, I need to turn Active D-Lighting back on ;)

Here's the original jpeg from the camera... reduced to 10% original size.

I take it there is a big Indian population there? That's a really cool looking temple. Kind of strange that they took so long to actually start using it.

I've seen some really impressive pictures from Indian weddings. They really go all out when they get married. The traditional dress is quite ornate.
