Front Strut Change 99Taco...

Ok, I got some 9000XLs that I need to put on the truck but i don't have spring compressors. Do i need them? I was told by a guy at a wrecking yard that i could just lift the truck by the frame, pull the bolts at the top and bottom and i am good to go. Otherwise i need to rent a tool at autozone or something.

Anybody confirm either way?

 

Did this guy have all his teeth and extremities?

Never trust a shop teacher with missing fingers.

Best and safest plan would be to have a shop that does this stuff on a daily basis do the dirty work for you. Sometimes that money spent is worth it.

Welcome to TW. I'm pretty sure you get a consensus from a majority of the folks here that this is a professional/semi-professional job.

 

definitely gonna need a spring compressor.....or take the struts off the truck and take them somewhere and get them to swap the shocks out.

 

x2. By far the safest way to get them switched, but you need a buddy.

Thanks guys, that's what i needed to know. The yard dog must have thought i was talking about the whole assembly. Pulling out the whole assembly looks pretty easy, 3 nuts on top and 1 on the bottom.

If your like me, your taco is your only vehicle. Need a buddy to drive you & the parts to the shop so they can switch the coils.

 

the extra set of hands is more then helpful when doing stuff like this. It's all pretty strait forward but a 5 min job with a helping set of hands can turn into a 45 min job by yourself

 

yep that is also true!

 

Do yourself a favor and get a set of ratcheting box wrenches for the top nuts. Sometimes you cannot get a socket on the inner two and it turns in to a bitch using a regular wrench. Other than that, easy job.

 

Excellent advice. I did that a few times last week before beginning.

 

x3....did this on mine when i installed my 881 coils and 5100's......makes life alot easier.
