I have a 1996 V6 Manual Tacoma. 4X4 stopped working. No dash light. Mechanic said problem is Transfer Case Switch 84222-35100. Toyota no longer "supports" that part. Can't find it in aftermarket. Any ideas? Is there a bypass procedure? Thanks for any help.

Thanks, tom-tom. So great of you to check that out for me. They do not have it....discontinued. Looks like I'm going to have to check out the used market. Very pissed Toyota would not continue to manufacture this part. There goes the support for first generation Tacos? Can they really be serious? Now I have no 4X4 only 2WD on a 4X4 truck? What's next? Time to sell ...? Anyone know of an aftermarket possibility?

After some research, this is just the indicator switch. Should be easy to find in a junkyard. Don't know if any of the other years work, a substitute is not listed.

I'm guessing the only issue is the ADD won't work (if your truck has it). If you have manual hubs, you should still be able to put it in 4x4.

99% if the time those switched only turn on the idiot light. I'm not sure on the Toyota System but $60 is a lot just for a light. Manual hubs ftw :)

I found an article on how to permanently engage the ADD if that switch, does indeed, need to be energized to get the vacuum line to engage the ADD.

    http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/

I haven't had the time to research if that switch is needed to turn on the vacuum.

nothing really wrong with having it permanently engaged, just adds a little more drag. My old '94 XJ was always spinning. Not sure when the Jeeps got away from the locking hubs but when they did, they didn't include any sort of an axle disconnect. Good ol' "shift-on-the-fly".

Very nice for simplicity sake. Has me thinking about finding an old solid tube now from one of the manual hubs Tacomas.

It does require going with a selectable locker in the front diff if you ever want more traction options.

I just applied power to my actuator let it engage and left it, I could always route a switch to it if I wanted but its been going strong for over a year now
