Hello all, I just sold my first Gen tundra, and bought a 99 sr5 extra cab. It's the 2.7 4x4. Full locker in rear already. Not sure if it was done or That's factory. So I've read all over and tried to learn all I can on this first Gen Tacoma. I'm looking for feed back from y'all. On some of the following. First off I've always planned an wanted 35's or bigger. But these trucks are small and I don't want to be lifted super high. (Not needed) so are 33's sufficient enough for deep snow wheeling and all around mudding etc.?! I'm also planning on looking into just a 3" suspension lift and add a leaf for rear. I don't mind looks of the BL's but don't feel like the hassle kinda. So instead of the BL for extra clearance I was looking at the 3"spacer lift and add a block in the rear also. (This is after the 3"suspension lift and add a leaf. ) an and does that sound do able?! Some I will do by myself. Some might get done in a shop. Also other plans for my rig are rock sliders same skid plate armor. And rock slider type of bumpers.

You probably should see what your diff gears are. Could be 358. Not great for big tires. There are plenty of guys smarter than me on this. Hopefully someone will fill this in for you. Also, welcome!

Prob has 4.10 gears. Ok for 33's but 4.88 would be better. You can't do spacers on top of a suspension lift. 3" is max u can do on these trucks. Your cv's can't do more. New 3" springs and a small 1" body lift with get you 33x12.50 or no BL and you can run 33x10.50. Good luck.

Hey Jesse. If you go to technical chat and go to page 2, you will see my thread"is there a difference". There is a diagram and explanation on determining your gears. Also a good forum for questions. GL

Four cylinder should have 4.56 gears. V6 has 4.10. Your truck is gonna ride terrible with a spacer lift, and could eventually cause problems. I was looking into it for awhile. Lifting IFS correctly isn't cheap

Wow that's pretty high geared haha. I bet that thing was a little sluggish. I thought all 4 cyl came with 4.56. He'd just have to look on the door and find the code

Yeah just swapped 5 speed into 96. 456 gears. It's so cool. I put 277,000 on 358 gears since june 95. It's like driving whole new truck. Plus it's not my long highway ride. THATS MY SEQUIA!

So my codes are B02A/59 so That's 3.58 2 pinion open diff. But I don't have one tire fire. Both my rear tires burn rubber. Any answers here?

Someone before you could have installed a locker/LSD. Easiest easy to tell is jack up the rear axle, and spin one tire, while in neutral. If open diff, the other tire will spin in the opposite direction. If it has a locker/LSD they will spin same direction. But if it was a locker, you would either be selectable or auto. And seeing as how you are still alive because you don't have an auto locker engaging all the time, and you haven't mentioned any kind of selectable, I'm gonna guess LSD. I will also add I thought I had LSD cause when I got my truck, both tires lit up the first time I spun them. Turns out I don't, cause I got stuck thinking I did. An open diff can spin both tires if they have equal traction.

Sounds like a good plan. At least you are getting good input. That's the same code my 95 5 speed had. I put 31's on back in the day. Lost performance was noticeable. Had to drive 3 yrs before going back stock. You will probably want at least 4:10 to do what you want. I am no authority though. Hopefully you can find what you need here at Tw. I was told with my 456 gears I could go all the way to 35's. Anyway, got to start somewhere. Keep asking and you will get steered in the right direction. Have to start priority list!

33s on that gear and 4 cyl is gonna bog down a lot. I would consider 3.58 a little over geared IMHO for a 4x4 4 cyl. Even my 2wd nissan had 3.70 gears. Really just depends on what you use your truck for and where you use it. If you have a bunch of mountains or tow, I wouldn't go 33s without a regear. If it's just a daily driver, have at it, just don't plan on it being a race car haha

I will look into it for sure. But I'm pretty sure it didn't have same traction. One tire was a foot in mud an other was on pavement! But thanks I will look

Thanks for the feedback. I'm gonna look into a regearing. It is my DD. But also will be wheeling in it. Sand, snow, mud camping etc. I think I will settle with a 3"suspension lift and 33's.an regear. Until I can turn it into a full out toy!

Well now I'm confused. You said in the original post full locker in the rear. How do you know that? That would explain both wheels spinning. 4cyl didn't come stock with a rear locker normally, but I have heard of a few getting the e locker on special order. If you have the e locker, you have a very rare truck. There should be a button to the left of your steering wheel that says rr diff lock if you do

Sorry for the confusion. No I don't have any buttons or switches. Maybe it is a lsd or it is just open diff and I was lucky to get em both to spin when I needed it to!?...
