no one said it was easy. however, 3 weeks on, 2 weeks off (all expenses covered trip home) isn't a bad deal. plus, they only let you do that for 1-2 years at a time so you don't get burnt out.

But half of that money is gonna go to taxes so with 70-80k take home plus living expenses, it'll still take some time to pay that 65k back

Not when the company adjusts your pay acordingly so your actual take-home is 140, as well as covering the fees for someone to personally do all of your taxes  they dump some serions cash into the elployees/jobs up there.

Holy shit. That's impressive if you can stomach the conditions of such pay.

However, I think its fair to note that not many engineers are willing do work in those conditions, hence why the pay is premium. Its on par with assignments in SE Asia, Africa, or LOGCAP (or similar programs) in the Middle East... although in the latter two security is a big issue.

probably colder than that. the site in north dakota i spent a few weeks on over the summer routinely hits -20 in the winter. i can only imagine was 1000 miles farther north can do to temperatures.

Chemical and Mechanical Engineers employed on the Gulf Coast earn more on average than anywhere else in the US, mainly due to the immense concentration of O&G & energy industry companies. Starting out between ~$80-110k/yr, unit engineers are among the highest paying entry-level jobs for new engineers. Does that mean there are higher paid entry level positions out there? Of course, but there aren't as many.

The money is there, but to repay $64,000 in two years is a wee bit optimistic.

I have a buddy working in a plant down here and his goal was 100k per year before he turned 30. He's gonna beat it by about 2 years

    LOL @ the analogy.

If I was single I would too, but it's a little different when you have a family though. A lot more to take under consideration.

Hell I'd still go. If my company offered me an assignment in a remote location, I'd give it serious thought.

I'd be surprised if starting government pay grades made that much. If they do, let me know. Big bucks can be made in your geographic region though. I know my company has a large presence out there as well as a lot of defense contractors.

    He a contact engineer?

Lol I hear you. Just don't want you to have unrealistic expectations though. I still think going back for your Mechanical Engineering degree is a win-win regardless of the immediate cost.

T'was my goal as well. Could have had it at 29, but we decided we wanted to move back home. Still don't know if it was the right choice or not. It was 5 hrs closer to all the good wheeling in the Midwest/east as well...
