Mono amp recomendations for JL10TW3-D4

I just got a JL Stealthbox for my doublecab and I am deciding on an amp for it. The specs say you want to send 400 watts RMS, its has dual 4-ohm voice coils. I am not an audio expert but from my research it seems like you wire this sub at 2-ohms.

A local audio shop said to pair it with the JL JX500/1 amp. This amp is 500 W RMS @ 2 ohms (14.4 V) & 410 W RMS @ 2 ohms (12.5 V). If the sub says 400 W RMS, isn't this amp too much for this sub?

I called Crutchfield and they recommended the JL XD300/1. This amp is 300 W RMS @ 2 ohms (14.4 V) & 270 W RMS @ 2 ohms (12.5 V).

I listen to a wide range of music and I will eventually be replacing my door speakers and tweeters as well, but I don't want to kill my sub, both amps are basically the same price. I'm not tied to JL amps, these are just the two that were recommended. If anyone has this Stealthbox, what are you running?

 

Both of those are good amps for the 10TW3. I am personally getting the 300W entry Alpine for mine. (Non-Stealthbox)

RMS wattage is a rating of stable power production from the amp. Proper setup with either amp will have the sub operating within it's recommended range.

If you are inexperienced and/or feel uncomfortable with setting up the amp yourself, have a shop do it.

 

Feeding the amp an extra 100w won't do any damage, so long as you have the gains set accordingly. It' gives you a little extra headroom, and cleaner power, as you're not pushing the amp to it's peak power output, creating a clipping signal. Clipping kills speakers, not over powering them by 100w. You'd be fine with JX500/1 set up properly with gains set to match.

 

That 500/1 should do just fine. Although according to JL's site it would void their warranty which seems odd. You may want to contact their customer support and ask about that seeing as how you would be using their amp. I don't see how 500w would ever harm that sub.

Both of those amps are right at $300, that's about as high as I want to go since I will be getting sound deadener for the rear wall and the doors, wiring kit, and remote bass knob now. I'm going to stay with my factory head unit for now and get a line-in/line-out converter. Eventually I will get an aftermarket HU and door speakers.

I drive my stealthbox off my XD700/5 which goes right in the spot on the stealthbox perfectly. It is the XD300/1 with 4 more channels at 100w/channel, so ya basically the same. works great.

 

Are you just looking for jl audio?or are you open to other options? Rockford fosgate p700-1bd does 450x1 @ 2ohm and can be had for under 300..

 

Your 10TW3 will thank you for the extra oomph. I have the 12TW3 and am running it off the sub channel of my PDX-V9 Alpine. The certificate that came with the amp stated as tested RMS output of 564W.

It LOVES the 500+ RMS the Alpine is feeding it - they are power hungry little buggers.

I'd strongly recommend the 500/1 vs. the 300/1. If you install your gear properly and have gain structure set correctly you will very likely NEVER have a problem with your sub. Unless you listen to exaggerated bass music for literally hours on end you will very likely not heat the voice coil to the point of failure (which is where the recommended power ratings/warranty stuff comes into play).
My 12w6v2-D2 served faithfully for a solid 10 years with excess of 800RMS going to it and never, ever had so much as hiccup. I'd still be using it were it not for the space constraints of the truck

I will be running 2 of them off the sub channel of my JL 900/5.

I thought if it would make a big difference giving them more power than a combined 500 watts and when you do the math and numbers giving it more power doesn't necessary make it all that much louder. Install has more to do with anything then throwing tons of power to things.

I confirmed with Mr. Marv since he's building my boxes and he said 500 watts should be plenty for a pair of them.

If I'm not happy I'll sell the amp and get a HD 750/1 or the Alpine equivalent and go from there. That will give just a tad more power. I don't think it will be an issue though with 500 watts.

 

Confirming that every application is unique - it won't hurt a bit to drive them off as little as 200W RMS. There are some good rules of thumb to practice though -
If your budget allows: Go for the bigger amplifier - the key here is headroom
If your budget or system design only allows for the smaller of the two - DO IT.
There is no electrical advantage in terms of overall output - SPL will be undetectable between the two

 

Do you have any pictures of the sub in place? i'm looking into the same sub setup I have seen a lot of good reviews on it along with the size it would be perfect for a double cab.

I did the same. It fits perfectly in the mounting location on the stealthbox and I really didn't want to have to run multiple amps to power the doors and sub. It also integrated well into the stock head unit using the the JL speaker to line out converter cables. I found a very good price on it from an authorized dealer that was supposed to be a closeout, but when it arrived, it was actually the newer XD700/5v2.

 

Nice! The guy I went through was not authorized. Everything was purchased new, I guess he got it all from a distributor and then sent to me. Said if there were warranty concerns I have to go to him, he goes to the distributor, then to JL. The whole system has been flawless and I got a crazy good deal on everything. So far so good.

 

I went with the XD300 for the sub and HD600/4 for the doors.

Just finished setting up the stereo in my rig. I also went with the 10TW3 in the stealth box.

I gave serious consideration to the HD600 with a Bit10, but decided instead to go with the all-in-one Audison Prima 8.9 bit DSP and 8 channel amp for the components (bridged for front).


I really like the sound. A lot! But...I already think I might have been happier with a 12" sub. I'll give it some time and see how I feel later.

Subwoofers are like buying a big screen TV. They seem to get smaller the longer you own them and you regret not getting the bigger model.

BTW: Powering the sub with JL Audio XD600/1v2. Power is definitely not a problem.

 

I have a taco 2018. I got the 10tw3d4 and the JL500/1 amp. I got everything brand new. 50hz 12+db and input all the way up. The amp went out fist but not completely I just can’t use the bass boost no more it go’s into protect mode. It lasted more then a month and I messed up when I had it on for like 5hrs.
